Comments on news posted 2007-09-21 17:05:02: Several satellite broadband resellers tell us that satellite broadband company Wild Blue may be halting new orders in several States, apparently because they're struggling with capacity. ..

capping, so evil...

>WildBlue does cap their users, but, like HughesNet, calls >such caps their "fair access policy" or FAP(pdf). The cap is >a rolling thirty day limit on data use that varies by tier, >but if exceeded results in the customer's broadband >connection being throttled to 128kbps/28kbps.

Recent FAP change

Last I knew, they sent out an e-mail saying they weren't changing the caps on their plans, but said you'll be subject to the FAP speeds once you've reached 80% of your threshold. Has this changed, or did the company really take away 20% while claiming that users could download just as much as before?

It would sound like...

I'd think it's an issue with the middle states, as if the satellite is not able to handle anymore transmissions on the spot beam of transponder(s) pointing at those areas/states... At least they're selling the service and business is doing good enough to hinder new customers from signing up...

Might as well use dialup

17MB download cap on their most expensive tier before someone is FAP'ed?!? That means one would get capped after merely downloading about four MP3s!

Who pays for stupid shit like this?!?

One might as well get an EVDO or EDGE-enabled phone and tether for the web. Costs less and you'd likely have more generous caps.

Re: capping, so evil...

Well you have to remember this, satellite is a totally different beast from cable.
In cable it is a closed system that can use any of the available spectrum ranging from 0-750MHz or more depending on the cable plant's configuration. If they need extra capacity they can split nodes or lay new cable.
Satellite on the other hand is a open system meaning its broadcast over the air and uses a much smaller part of the spectrum. I would guess around 100-200Mhz of bandwidth. This same signal is broadcast over the entire country meaning it has a single data pipe to move all that information through for everyone not 50-300 homes like cable.
So that is why they have to institute caps to insure that their is enough available bandwidth for everyone. Yeah I know that sucks but hey that's physics for ya.

We don't all choose to live in the urban setting. I happily gave up DSL and the great state of Kalifornia to give my family a better life.

Who pays for shit like this ?

3 of my neighbors have wild blue and love it. They must be doing something right if the are closing down spot beams due to the amount of under served consumers in rural areas of the country.

I have EDGE from AT&T I'm happy with it. Its not the fastest but for downloading school work and my everyday Internet usage its great.

IF I need to download a big file I just drive into town and find the first bonehead with his router unsecured and freeload off them.

Its 17GB not MB and some users that is more than enough.
Were not all "Heavy Downloaders"

I read that wrong. I thought it was 17MB, not 17GB. That's a fair allotment for the average user IMO. Hell, I just hit 14GB after 20 days and I did download a crapload of music the other night.

I do envy those enjoying the suburban life, it's not like I'm trying to come off as a snobbish city slicker.

Rural is where its at, I survived many years of being a bus operator with the LACMTA-SCRTD and don't miss the rat race one bit.

Now that I think about it....

I bet the beginning of the month sucks for that service, because all the heavy downloaders get their bandwidth back, and start smacking the heck out of the transponder...

The cap is a rolling thirty-day limit on data use that varies by tier

Oh yeah, like Missouri is a perfect paradise, NO SUCH PLACE EXISTS! Please, leave your bigoted and "tabloidized" views of California out of this, and stick to the subject, satellite broadband

 Capacity issues?

What's that? Sounds like a person or in this case company problem. Oh well should of thought about that when they sent a SAT to space.

Money money money.....

AT&T and Cingular...

So, what then becomes of this marriage? If I'm not mistaken, one of AT&T commitments in order to receive FCC approval was that broadband would be reachable to 100% of the residential units in AT&T territory by the end of 2007. They've skated by in the past, thanks to one of the little footnotes mentioning satellite as broadband. Now what? I can't imagine EDGE being rolled out here. They haven't even covered Grand Rapids, let alone any of the corridors between GR and Lansing, and GR and Kalamazoo. Perhaps that's the explanation to the dozens of AT&T vans I've been spotting in the wild just in my neighborhood alone?

Rural Service

Here is something interesting for you all to ponder: I've been a WildBlue subscriber for almost 18 months. For the first 14 months, service was good. Then I started getting cut off during daylight hours -- not just throttled mind you -- totally disconnected. Mostly, I would be connected (modem light on) until I actually tried to go online, then I would just be knocked off (modem light out). Sometimes it would let me download one site, then upon the next click, knock me off. After several phone calls and service visits, I was just told WildBlue is a shared service and there is nothing they could do. Well, I wrote a complaint letter to the FCC, and the FCC forwarded it to WildBlue. Guess what? My service is back up to nearly 100% and WildBlue says they are crediting my account $100. Satellite is the only option to dialup out here in the Tennessee boondocks. Not even cell phone signal here.

Not a good option

I had WB for 11 months and it was the worst isp I ever had. Equipment failure, poor tech support, and a FAP of 7.5 gigs cap. Both upload and download counted toward this cap. Thankfully Sprint EVDO became available to me and I never have had a problem since. I would not recommend Wildblue, its a very poor company.

Advertising

They've been advertising the heck out of their service around here lately. Every time I hear it on the radio, I try to remember the website. Always forget it!! Now, I'm checking it out.

Edit:
Checked it out in about 2 seconds. What a ripoff!! Who would pay that much for those crappy speeds? And I though Charter was lagging behind. I know, I'm comparing cable to satellite, so what. Still a ripoff!!

what

@insightbb.com
how is it a ripoff when its the only thing you can get in some rual areas
