Set-up Fee???

Has anyone heard of a $200 set-up fee for establishing a dry DSL line? I had a voice line on my account but I canx and switched to Vonage and AT&T wants $200 for a provision install. Anyone heard of this??

Hopefully

Hopefully I'm all set up to go here in Chicago. I called the number listed in the article and told them I wanted to switch. No hassles or anything, the lady sounded glad to help me make the transition. For whatever reason, they are going to cut my phone service off on Friday and they have to provision a new set of wires for DSL only. I'm praying it's a cleaner line than I have now-noise margin and attenuation aren't exactly awe inspiring. She said service would be back up Monday but I'd have to go through the account set up again. I was told price would be 28.99 a month including taxes. This would be the first time in all my DSL experience the (un)advertised price is the same as the price on the bill.
I signed up last month with Magicjack for VOIP so don't see any compelling reason to keep voice with SBC. I remember a couple of years ago we had a major power outage due to wind here in Chicago and land line was out while cell worked just fine. This proved their argument of 'it's more reliable' to be hog wash.

You don't have to ask for a retention offer.

In case you don't know, you can actually sign up at an AT&T Store like the one I work in here in Abilene.

Same prices.

$23.99 for 1.5 mbps and 3.0 Mbps for 3.0 Mbps
$4.00 discount if you combine it with your cell phone bill.

You do have to be in an area however where they offer they Dry Loop service for this price, which is most of Texas and other areas.

Do they offer this service for new customers?

Got mines installed

Switched from Cable to DSL Express 23.99 today in Austin TEXAS. No term, no hookup charges. I opt to not get their modem. Instead I got a 2WIRE 2700 wireless DSL from EBAY for $27 shipped. It's hooked up and working. GREAT SAVINGS!!!! is the main reason to switching. First time on DSL instead of Cable too.

More Bull from AT&T

So I called the Caflironia service number to switch to Direct DSL, but they claim I won't get the new service for 30 DAYS!!!!

They say it takes 2 weeks to get rid of my current service, and 2 weeks to connect my new service.
