Comments on news posted 2007-09-26 18:25:35: 8x8, provider of Packet8 residential VoIP service, did something today we'd not seen yet: they issued a press release stating that they would be the preferred provider for customers of a competing VoIP service that's going out of business. ..

That's funny

"Were the official provider for some VoIP going out of business but we can't mention who."

I think you are right karl, yea might be a good idea to mention who and let them know about it.

Reminds me a bit of a great Sam Malone line from Cheers:

Hmmm..

I wonder if it's Vah, Vah, Vah, Vahonage?

@ 93 cents per share, just might be. Two multi-million dollar judgments later.

It would make my day of Vonage went out of business. They are a terrible example of how a business should be run. I'm surprised their advertising hasn't bankrupted them already.

Their service and cancellation departments are beyond substandard. That's what you get when you outsource and hire illegals to run the show.

Vonage has way more than 12,000 subscribers

and that'd be ol' net2phone (»net2phone.com).

So are people already taking bets on Vonage? That'd be insane if it really was them! That ad for "People do stupid things" comes to mind "like 'borrow' patented technology from major telcos and then try to resell it under a new name and make money!"

I guess you didn't see the 12,000 subscriber line in that bit of news

If it was, Packet 8 would go out of business because it wouldn't be able to handle the load.

It's not Vonage...Who has 12,000 subscribers? Read Below

According to the agreement, Packet8 will be the only brand presented and promoted to the roughly 12,000 subscribers who will be left without VoIP phone service after the company winds down its VoIP operations over the next three months

Re: I can guess

I thought Vonage had ~2 million subscribers. As others have cited, the article said 12,000 subscribers.

I'm not sure Vonage can go out of business in this manner. With 2 million customers, it would be pretty hard for a cable company or telco to pass up buying them on the cheap. The buyer should be able to rapidly reprogram the customer ATAs to use their own equipment or, if profitable, keep Vonage's infrastructure in place. I would guess that Vonage has a lot of long term agreements with local CLECs and any likely buyer would assume those contracts -- unless Vonage filed for bankruptcy and voided all the contracts. If a telco bought them I would guess that they could make a killing since they could migrate the POTS termination from CLEC equipment to their own and then aside from the cost of SIP infrastructure, the rest of the monthly fee is mostly profit.

Re: Hmmm..

12,000 subscribers? Try 1.85 million, last quarter 2006. Probably more now.

Service is excellent, including phone support, although I've only had to call them a couple of times. They even called me back to make sure everything was working properly.

Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about.

earthlink

hey i just thought of something... I'm thinking it might be Earthlink's True Voice... Earthlink's new CEO has said he wants to concentrate on their core ISP business... and I'm thinking they may have only 12,000 customers, if that... hmm

Re: I can guess

Haha "Patented Technology"...I guess you really haven't read the patents.....Verizon apparently thinks they own the patent to SIP packets and/or any other protocol similar to SIP thats used for VOIP and Sprint has a patent for telephony signaling over an ATM network(which Vonage doesnt even use). Oh, wait you're from Kansas...didnt your state vote against crazy theories like evolution....
