Comments on news posted 2007-10-03 16:58:29: [att=1222992,r]Users in our AT&T forum say the company is now shipping new Motorola/Netopia 2210 modems with self-install kits. While it's somewhat similar to older Speedstream 4100 modems used by the company, it is smaller and sleeker. ..

That is a nifty feature -- I wonder if we'll start seeing modems that can run other loop diagnostics.

Looks nice!

I do like the look of it. I wonder though if there wouldbe any performance enhancements or just strictly upgrades to the diagnostics.

how about lower power consumption?

i think lower power consumption would be nice, considering skyrocketing energy costs.

price wise

Yes they replaced the 4100b's and are at the same price they were. Which I think is $49.95+ tax(state)+ s&h (flat:$12.95 typically). It makes it about the same price at your door shipped as opposed to a best buy run. I think at most it's either $1 more or less than a best buy run. I know it's not much greater than that. As far as availability, I would wait about a week or two before ordering so the 4100b stockpiles can be depleted.

Dennis See Profile has one and so far is quite impressed. It don't have a power button but then again, the power cord is not that far away from where the power button was.

Another interesting feature that was pointed out is they are defaulted to "connect on demand" as opposed to "smart keep alive" People with routers may have to go in and adjust this, but it's not that difficult to do and no more complex than the 4100b was.

I am pushing another good idea for just the basic modem is to put a dial-up counter part in it so if you lose sync you can report it and still have dial up capabilities, even though you don't have a dial up modem in your computer. Which some new computers now a days are not coming with dial up modems in them. I am hoping in the near future at&t will consider it. Even if it was just $5-10 more at most, most people would probably consider it because USB dial up modems are around that price and they don't have to add more equipment to the computer or have the computer in the shop to have a dial up modem installed.

Don't know about these new modems, but...

the good folks at AT&T told me that the modem that they sent to me when I signed up at my current residence three years ago would cost me $1,500 to replace - and it's a big, ugly, blue-green brick of a thing, manufactured in 1999, that I keep well-hidden from view. Not to say it doesn't do its job or is unreliable - haven't had a single issue with it.

Here
2241

These look almost exactly like the Netopia 2241 that AT&T SE customers have been getting for almost 2 years now.

Re: Don't know about these new modems, but...

I'm still using my SpeedStream 4060 and have a brand new in the box SpeedStream 5360 from 1 other SBC promotions.

omgVzShillLOLno

@charter.com

VZ modems have had this for ... forever?

Except VZ customerz have had this for a while now:

•Can tell you if you are on interleaved or fast path
•Gives you noise margins on the up and downstream now.

OMG even the crapiest VZ modem I've used has has those stats. Good grief man.

Now AT&T can enjoy a slew of customers calling in to switch from interleaved to fast path.

If I was an AT&T customer and was on interleaved with a good margin still I'd be po'd at them cause fastpath is soo much better for latency.

Good old Westells....

Re: Don't know about these new modems, but...

Ahh a usb modem. Yea they were the thing back then. Those were the ones that if you didn't have a NIC you could get one of those and get connected. The ones we sell today are ethernet driven.

Just curious what's the model on your "new" 5360? if it's a -023 model it might need the firmware patch.

I would have to find and open the box on the 5360. I'll look tonight. That 4060 isn't a USB, its a normal ethernet modem.

Thanks for the heads up.

Motorola Surfboard

Ill stick with that on my other isp. ATT could offer broadband at 1 dollar and I'd object to their service. Either way, no new sleek modem impresses me. My modem Motorola SB 101 is sweet too =P.

Re: how about lower power consumption?

While it's always nice to save power, I hardly think these devices pull enough to matter.

It is the same box relabeled for AT&T.

And then search for 2240N-VGx

And here is the diagnostics info available to AT&T support staff:

Re: 2241

I purchased a used Netopia 3346N on eBay several months ago to replace my aging Verizon Westell modem and Multitech RouteFinder modem.

It has the same features as the 22xx series. Been very happy with the modem/router. They can be had on eBay at $20-40 rather then getting them directly from your friendly ISP.

It is exactly the same case.
Any chance ATT will offer ADSL2+ that the 2241 is capable of?

I just asked Matthew See Profile and we were thinking how is that possible? The only 4060's we ever saw were USB connected devices.

Can you take a pic of yours and post it? I would really like to see it.
