It's Ebay's Prerogative

They can set their ToS as needed and appropriate. Why would Jajah, or anyone else for that matter, think otherwise?

Good for Ebay

Ebay is not required to include a competitors product on it's own website.

Just because companies like Ebay, Microsoft etc.. are 800 pound Gorrilla's they should not have to include competitior's software in their products.

OH NOES111!!!1!1!11

A company doing what IT wants to do? HOLY CRAP! Who would've EVER thunk it?

WOW!
/sarcasm

Now, if you don't like eBay's Pro "Skypedness" then take you arse and your business somewhere else. Otherwise, get over it. If eBay wants to be Pro Unix/Linux and block Windows then ya know what? Let em do it! It is their company. I'd block you too if your name was Jajah.

It is amazing that some folks think everything should be "equal".

Re: Good for Ebay

Most likely, if eBay is pro-Skype it's already working hand in hand with their service it's hardly newsworthy that they told another company trying to slid it's self onto eBay's pages to sod off.

I'm sure you'll soon have all of the "Jajah's" of the world claiming anticompetitiveness since eBay owns Skype.

EBay being "Pro-Skype" is one way of looking at it...
...they OWN Skype.

I think it's a little more than what you guys are looking on the surface.

I am always one to say that business should be able to operate in it's own model and not be told what it can and can't do..

BUT, Yes, as someone said below, these large gorillas are often told that they can't exclude others from use with in it's service. Funny they mention Microsoft of all companies.

eBay may find that it's "everything you do must be through eBay" policy can get challenged and fail. eBay also claims that it's not part of the auction, rather, it's just a place for people to sell and buy and it's a free market place. If that's the case, I'm very sure that it could be challenged and eBay can wind up sitting on the losing side on this one if they want to push it.

eBay is either part of the auction, or not.. they can't have it both ways.

@rr.com

Do as we say, not as we do.

If eBay wants "all interaction (to) take place within the eBay marketplace", why does it partner with Yahoo! in the US and Google internationally to place third party vendor ads on its search screens that take users offsite to make purchases from competitors of its own sellers?

Keeping a competitor's VOIP off the site is one thing, but attributing its reason to a policy it doesn't enforce when it's to eBay's benefit is dishonest. And lame.

Disagree

I don't know but I'm surprised so many people support ebay without looking at the issue. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from reading on the buttons it would appear they are embedded in the item description, it does not require anything from ebay part to maintain them but it does make things easier for seller/buyer. Instead ebay forces sellers to use its own skype service. Many have said it's up to ebay how to run its business, however what would you say if ATT made a policy that forbids its users to use any other long distance carrier except ATT when you buy local loop from them? The ebay issue is the same, ebay forbids using competing service while shoving skype that they own to the sellers.

The problem with your example is that AT&T is a heavily regulated company that is subject to rules that do not also apply to eBay. Do you really think AT&T lets customers choose a LD carrier out of some sense of fair play?

How easy it is for eBay to let this slide is irrelevant, and they are not forcing anyone to use anything.

What "issue" is there to look at? eBay is a private company. They have every right in the world to control the content of their website, no matter how nutty it may seem to others. And they don't even have to explain why, except maybe to stockholders.

Buyers and sellers, of course, have every right to take their business elsewhere if the restrictions become too much of a hassle. At that point eBay can reconsider its policy, or risk going out of business.

If you ran a business, would you help promote a competitor? For free?

Yeesh! To me this is a no-brainer. I'd throw JaJah out on their keesters too.

 Beware of Ebay and PayPal

Ebay also bans Google Checkout too, I was surprised last year when they closed my auctions and told me that Google Checkout was Unsafe and a Fraudulent form of Payment. I say Ebay is Fraudulent, I was banned not too long after 9/11 2001, because after Ebay got me ripped off, I changed my name to Ebay_UN_WTO_Nafta_Are_Evil and they also Banned other people that bought from me and they Banned my Brother because we had sent money back and fourth through PayPal when we needed money. They told me that I ran a terrorist organization and they told my brother he was part of my so called terrorist organization. None of my famuily or my friends use Ebay or PayPal anymore, because there too paranoid and corrupt.

I know "thunk" as well. I do use "holy crap" a lot, I guess in lieu of vulgar words. I do appreciate your advice, but with my current work schedule I'm unable to include any additional English language studies into my routine.

They are...

Just pissed that almost no seller and buyer wants to actually talk to each other by voice, let alone using Skype.

Re: Good for Ebay

I agree, Fiberguy.

Ebay wants to be known as "just a place where things are sold" so it can't be sued when buyers and sellers get scammed and ebay does nothing about it.

How ebay is involved with almost every transaction:
-Ebay owns PayPal (which is almost forced on sellers)
-It has a dispute dept (window dressing to make it look they are trying end scams)
-Ebay has a "feedback" system, which they won't change pretty much unless you sue the person who defamed you
-Ebay forces sellers to put actual shipping charges on it through a system they created
-Ebay tries to make all sellers use Skype
-Ebay's takes money to list, money to list higher in results, and money on the sell price.
-Ebay has workshops on how to sell
-Ebay defends powersellers to death

Ebay not being intimitally involved in 99% of all sales is ridiculous.

If you read the sellers gripes, Ebay screwed "store owners" for auctions ala bidding ala more fees, allows shilling, and just put in a feature so you can't look up the buyer or the seller. Only Ebay really knows the buyer and the seller.

You know what's funny, kind of off to the side... eBay has been adding many new features except for one that I know is a good one - and would/could actually benefit them.

They could stop sniping easily by extending the end of the auction by 2 minutes if the last bud came in with in 60 seconds of the auction closing... but they don't.

With all the new "buy it now" or "make an offer" and other features they are adding, they've refused to add that one - which, of all things, is how a typical auction actually works.

One reason - it encourages bidders to bid higher earlier which gives them more fees.

Again, I know it's a little off subject, but it does kind of lend to how eBay really IS involved in the auction process even though they say they aren't.

I just think Ebay is a crooked, unprincipled mess.

absolutely nothing wrong with eBay using its own Skype and not other voice services on its own site. if you don't like it, buy and sell somewhere else.
