Comcast issued a statement saying "We recognize that there is room for improvement and that even one bad customer experience is one too many."

Duh. Glad she didn't need to make a 911 call.

How about EVERY customer service experience is a bad one. They did the exact same thing to me, my dad, and 3 other people I know. They hooked my service up wrong (used too many splitters before the modem and so it wouldn't synch, then left with no working internet thinking they did a "job well done") A friend of mine had them not show up 4 times. Call and schedule, no show. Apologize, still no show.

It happens over and over. I don't know ANYONE who has not had Comcast not show up for the installation at least once. They are the second worst company I have ever dealt with after AOL.

Brian Roberts, HAHAHAHA, how's your old man Ralph Roberts doing these days???

Absolutely Hilarious !!!

Any Comcast office I have ever been to actually has Bullet Proof Glass between the Comcast reps and the customers.

I am not kidding, literally pullet proof glass/polymer at least 2 inches thick, between the reps and customers.

Not in a high crime area of town either.

Comcast's office security has always been higher than that of a typical bank...

Comcast, would of course always put the security of their employees above all else.

This story could almost could be chalked up to a myth or "sub-urban" legend.

I would see Comcast letting their own employees carry guns for personal protection, before they would ever be subject to an encounter with Grandma with a Hammer.

Although Comcast is quite good at customer abuse themselves, maybe their employees carry hammers too, and Granny was only defending herself.

Yup, the Comcast office here has the bullet proof glass as well, but all this time I thought it was to protect the CSR's from robberies, not irate customers.

Whoa, Bullet proof glass in an office? You guys must live in some rough areas. I have to say that's pretty sad when things are so bad you have to put bullet proof glass up, I feel bad for the people that have to put up with that crap.

you obviously missed the point totally. Comcast is going the way of every major corporation that lies. They are to big for their own shoes and could care less about their clients..Bullet proof glass almost everywhere no matter the neighborhood

Re: pissed off granny

My local office has no glass, and luckily we get terrific service. We are former Adelphia customers though, and Comcast kept all those people, who by the way, are our neighbors so they dast not give poor service for we know their names, their children and so forth.

That office worker is going to have some difficulties now, because Comcast will miss three appointments to replace the keyboard and monitor, and he'll have to wait all day, and then the replacements won't work right...

We have yet to have a missed appointment, in fact, they are sometimes early, and often call before coming. I should note we are in an former Adelphia area, so that may explain it. This is also a very rural area (Mendocino County in NorCal, 3800 sq.miles size, 88,000 population), so it's not like they have millions of customers to deal with.

Yea.. Bravo.. go attack an innocent counter person!

Way to go..

I hope she gets 15 years in prison with no parole. 75 or not, a bad install or not.. she's right, what does she have to lose,.. but the rest of her freedom.

I'm sure the counter person is going to have problems now because granny was upset.

Get real people. That's not the right way to handle it and all of those people supporting granny should be ashamed to condone violence as an answer to something like this.

It just shows how off the path this country really has gotten.

Yes I would have to agree with this person. I don't have comcast, I've heard the stories, I really do have sympathy for you guys because I can understand a SMALL fraction of the aggression against comcast (I have Windstream and Windstream sounds about like Comcast when it comes to my own person experiences), but most of you are not grasping the concept that the granny smashed an INNOCENT support rep's equipment. That was foolhardy, for one. Two, this shows the maturity level of the lady; instead of being patient (I know that's hard for such an unreliable/dishonest company, really) or even disconnecting service OR even calling the billing office and demanding refund of payment for as long as the service is not fixed (I'm sure comcast has this option because MOST major ISPs do) OR EVEN if she wanted to take comcast to court, she decides to take out her frustration through blind rage (at least her actions exhibit blind rage). This is NOT satisfactory conduct, but I'm not saying she should be put in jail; that would be bad news for comcast because comcast would be "eaten alive" by news outlets as someone states in a comment here. I'm saying that she needs her service FIXED, and if it can't be fixed, why not switch to someone else? What's the big deal in switching?

She had a cellphone. It was mentioned in the story about using their cellphone. So the so-called panic over her medical condition is pure BS.

When the Shaws returned home, they discovered they had no phone service at all.

A cell phone call to Comcast resulted in their receiving a new number and a promise that someone from the company would call on Monday.

Jail? Not likely.

If Comcast decides to prosecute, they'll have to endure the story of WHY she went all Thor-ess on them in the first place, and the news outlets will EAT THEM ALIVE. Very bad PR move. I'm betting Comcast'll try to fix things and hope to make this go away as quietly and quickly as possible. (And that's not likely now, either...)

Otherwise, she would have been left in phone bank hell, getting the customer service rep. round around and around, without getting any issues resolved quickly.

Anger management? Pfft, Perhaps these companies should try customer service issue resolvment & management first.

Speaking from a personal experience which began in December 2006 and having the issue resolved on Sept. 26/2007. I can certainly understand why people snap and go postal or do as this lady did. Anger management my azz, that only teaches one how to wear a welcome mat on ones back comfortably, fugg that. Glad to see this lady have the cojoines to stand up for herself.

One minor problem with this assumption...
Most of Comcast's tech support is in America (there's a bit from Canada). So ya got to blame your problems on your fellow countrymen, not some smucks across the sea.
Dude, what's your point? Like it's any better having some knuckle-dragging hill-billy in the midwest reading the same fucking manual?

ok now what she accomplished is to raise her local bill so they can hire a security guard(s) for the office.

resorting to violence isnt gonna change anything that happened to her. im not saying she didnt have issues clearly she did. now if she did want to keep the service she may not be able to, atleast in my area they will disco all services if you threaten harm to a tech whom comes out to the home they simply wont take the risk. not sure how they would handle an irate customer who shows up at the office smashing equipment.

Sounds like to me..

that the REAL problem is with the 'local regulators'-why did they not resolve the problem?- No kahoonas? No real teeth in the regulatory wording?-A lot of these 'issues' would be resolved rather quickly AND correctly if the proper authorities would do their jobs and enforce the regulations.

Double Standard

Since she's a 75 year old woman, she's smiling for the cameras and being treated like a hero. I bet if I went into my local Time Warner office and started swinging a hammer around, saying I was "mad as hell" because my service wasn't connected, I would still be sitting in jail, and would be no hero. I don't know about her community, but where I am, the LAPD would probably have been called with the SWAT team surrounding the building to arrest a madman.

I don't condone what she did but I sure empathize with her.Comcast as well as other providers treat customers like so much crap and you need a lwyer to deal with them. Comcast flat out lied repeatedly to her, failed to deliver on a contract then said, in essence, "scr#w you- take it to court". I cut my losses with Comcast when they wouldn't even come out to replace their lousy strung cable from the pole that was hanging so low it got ripped out by a passing delivery truck. I had to pull the cable back to my home and re-attach it and they never returned calls to their "No support" line. They suck as a company and its high time we end the financial blackmail and implied intimidation that they hand out like their rate hikes

What she did was wrong - no doubt..

but then what Comcast did was just as wrong if not worse - as someone else noted - thank god she did not have to call 911 for a fire or an emergency that could have resulted in death and left Comcast with a possible wrongful death lawsuit.

Seems to me they got off easy and probably still have her as a customer if they fixed it finally.

Oh yeah, (a) providing poor customer service in a capitalistic economy where you can take your business elsewhere vs. (b) breaking the law and destroying property -- totally the same thing. We all know how frequently 911 is used, and of course she couldn't have just used the neighbor's phone. Newsflash -- having phone service and/or access to 911 isn't a constitutional right. Stop with the frivolous lawsuit talk.

Re: What she did was wrong - no doubt..

There would not be a frivolous lawsuit. PLENTY of occurances where she could get to a local phone but not to a neighbor and it has NOTHING to do with thinking 911 being a "constitutional right" but instead with common sense.

BTW - I never implied that she was not at fault or did not do anything wrong - quite the opposite and she was arrested to boot and charged appropriately.

While I can appreciate people get angry over something like this, this reaction is way over the top. And, it's certainly not some support reps fault what a tech did or didn't do out in the field.

I'd suspect there's also more to this story. Who knows what the tech(s) had to endure out at this womans house after the first missed appointment. Maybe they just said screw this lunatic..and decided for their own safety..they needed to walk off the job.

If more people

If more people did what this (slightly loopy) lady did, do you think that we'd get better service?

If so, I'll gladly go grab the ol' sledgehammer and start beating on some doors.

Seriously though. What options did she have left?

She made phone calls. She talked in person. She contacted the local agencies responsible and no one did anything. She could continue to complain about it which would result in probably, you guessed it, nothing. She could cancel her service altogether - and probably suffer a cancellation fee as per standard in contracts (cancelling costing you money because your service doesn't work? Would you be willing to deal with that?)... She could go there in person and try to talk to people - they'd probably schedule another appointment which they wouldn't show up for.

I can't say that I would do exactly what she did if I were in that situation, but I applaud her anyways.

In short, if my shit is broken because you won't do your job, then I think it's fine for me to come break your shit until you realize how much of an inconvenience it is.

Seriously though. What options did she have left?
The options that civilized people use. Cancel the service, and take your money elsewhere.

It's what I did when Vonage screwed my service up. It's what I did with Comcast HSI when I was on the phone for hours on end with them, and they refused to roll a truck since the advertised speed was an "up to" speed, even thought I was getting >700 MB down all the time.

If Comcast wasn't offering her reliable service, she has a choice to go back to Verizon. That is, what she ultimately did...

Easier said than done if there are early termination fees associated with the triple play package.

But I think it's safe to say...
Comcast's customer service. It's Comcastic Craptastic!

I've been in those shoes before with Comcast. I also applaud her for getting her point across for the world to see.

I didn't read the story too in depth but didn't this happen in a Commonwealth state? That being the case the state could (and usually does) file all applicable charges it can for each case, regardless if the "victim(s)" wish to press said charges. With only this one being charged it makes you wonder if they sympathize with her or if they received some hush-money from Comcast to make this go away fast(er).

I'm not angry at her

I don't condone what this woman did, but Comcast has such crummy service and I have on occasion wanted to do the same thing that she had the courage to do.

Re: I'm not angry at her

I think she hammered it home well.
