| Much misinformation All I can write is that almost everyone here has been misinformed. Verizon is going to use your CPNI information, but not your name or telephone number. This is not for directing targeted information to subscribers individually, but to research the preferences of the verizon subscriber base as a whole.
While I believe it is a good idea to opt out (and I have done so), those who think that their individual CPNI information is at risk are clearly mistaken, based on Verizon's own announcement.

| Re: Much misinformation I agree too many people spreading misinformation...
This isn't for them to sell your info to 3rd party companies. This is to share your info with it's own companies. For things like bundle discounts and the whole one bill thing. I don't agree with the knee jerk reaction that they are selling your info. FCC has mandated they have to give you this notice when passing info between different divisions. Despite the fact that Verizon Wireless shares the Verizon name they aren't actually the same company.
My concerns aren't so much for me but for who I call. They have no chance to opt in or out. How much info is used? What info is used? I have already emailed Verizon Wireless for more details. I think that everyone should contact them with your concerns. Make your voice heard.
I am not saying to opt in...cuz I didn't. I am just saying read the articles and research it for yourself instead of blindly following everyone else.

| I got the notice today...
...and canceled that afternoon.
While they have an opt-out option, I submit that it should have been opt-in. Plus I was offended by the policy. I didn't sign up for Verizon Wireless so they can give my calling information to Joe Marketer.
What cinched the decision is the BS I had to go through to cancel my service. The local Vz store says they can't cancel service there. liars. I call Vz. A rep heard I wanted to cancel because of CPNI then blind transfers me to the CPNI opt-out line.

| Are we sure this is true? Thank you to those who posted the number to call, I just opted out. Verizon Wireless is really starting to p*** me off with their somewhat limited choices in phones and now this. If they didn't have the best coverage for my location I would be opting out of their service completely!
That being said, can anyone verify that all of this is true? I was kind of uncomfortable having to provide the last 4 numbers of my SS # in order to opt-out. Most opt-out services let you just enter the telephone #. Maybe I'm being overly paranoid, but... -- When one door closes, another opens...

| Re: Are we sure this is true? Thanks for the confirmation about the last 4 numbers of the SS #. I've actually been thinking about switching wireless carriers because of Verizon's locked phones and somewhat limited choices. This might be enough to push me into making that decision sooner rather than later. -- When one door closes, another opens... | |

when I called the residential OPT-OUT line, I was prompted to enter my Verizon Wireless phone number, then my billing zipcode. (Additionally, I had to enter my account security pin code, however, this is due to my personal settings.)
That's it; never was asked for my SSN last four numbers.
Wonder if there are regional differences? I'm in California. The number I called was 800-333-9956.

| Here are the numbers to call to OPT-OUT Last month I received a similar but differently worded notice in my monthly bill. When I called customer service they insisted it was for business customers only, however the new insert along with the new "improved wording" makes it clear it also includes residential Verizon Wireless accounts.
The numbers to call to OPT-OUT are:
800-333-9956 RESIDENTIAL
800-372-5750 BUSINESS

2 edits | Missed by that much! Thanks again for posting this info. I saw the pamphlet in the bill a week ago, but upon reading this I asked the wife where the info that came with the bill was. "In the recycling" - I think that companies like Verizon are counting on that type of dismissal with these materials. "Honey, you might want to keep the ones that say, 'Customer Notice/Agreement'..."

| Class Action! I see a Class Action lawsuit here.
Your information is YOUR information.
Verizon's selling of it is a violation of the trust you place in them not to abuse your information and give it or sell it to persons that may use it to base purposes. I see identity theft possibilities here.
I am of the belief that we all should include a copyright notice anytime we need to provide our private information to any corporate entity. Then when they try to sell it or give it to the government we can sue them for infringement just like the RIAA/MPAA is doing. -- Personally its not God I dislike, its his fan club I cant stand.

| Remember the Federal Do Not Call List? this may not be... Do your own research and make your own decision. Don't jump off a cliff if everyone else is.
Remember the Federal Do not call list? I doubt Verizon would break the law so boldly by sharing our "personal" information. The FCC doesn't allow it.
Here's some information I pulled off Verizon's webpage.
"Customer Proprietary Network Information Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is CPNI?
A. Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) is information created by virtue of the relationship between a carrier and a customer, including the quantity, technical configuration, type, destination, location, and amount of use of a customer's telecommunications services purchased (including specific calls a customer makes and receives) and related local and toll billing information. It does not include published information such as one's name, address or telephone number."

| Not an accident
Verizon did say on RCR wireless that they are doing "the right thing". However, that is only after an extended debate with the FCC, to get permission to do this as an OPT-OUT, not an OPT-IN.
They had to fight for this, because originally, they were going to have to do it as OPT-IN.
Unfortunately, lobbying won and they got permission for OPT-OUT.
