How about if they stick one in your backyard and give you the same exact rates as everyone else? Would you still be the happiest camper alive?

Underground

Why can't they bury those things in a pit and put a cover over it? They really are ugly.

An underground Vault would many times more expensive.

Mask them

Why cant they mask them like cell phone companys have done with cell towers.

Search "stealth cell towers" in google pictures to see what I mean.

I'll be a happier camper if at&t stick it in your front yard, give me me unrestricted connection and disqualify you from the service.

NIMBY! NIMFY either!

The Embarq remote terminal I'm hooked up to looks roughly like that but wider, no one complains that I've heard.

Shrubs is a fine idea although you could only block three sides.

ugh

People want cheap service but then they don't want to deal with the equipment. Ok, so AT&T buries the terminals in an underground vault. Hope you're prepared to pay $100 for phone service, $200 for 1.5mbit DSL, and $150 for 70 channels of TV.

Camouflage

Maybe they should paint the a camouflage scheme and the people won't be able to see them.;) That or maybe they should paint them blaze orange or hot pink for a while. After that, people won't be bitching about the dull gray ones.

Cell phone companies don't do that on most towers. The few that you see when you search "stealth cell towers" are VERY expensive to put up vs. the normal tower.

Too funny...

West Chicago has a LOT more serious problems that are decreasing property values -- try illegal aliens living 12 to a house and driving around without insurance flying Mexican flags (year round!) and blaring music out of their cars.

Re: Or...

The far and away majority are put in out of the way places or fenced in. But Chicago politicians just want more graft from ATT so they'll rail on them. They have more money than homeless people and less local political power than developers (both of which are far greater at ruining the scenery.

It's odd that you think that. I know for a fact that West Chicago is the fastest growing community in DuPage and one of the fastest growing in Illinois. Property values have been going up like crazy. There is a reason developers chose West Chicago for the RTP-like DuPage Technology Park...and government and industry have been flocking to it!

In all my years of living and working there and around there, I've never noticed the large numbers of illegal immigrants, Mexican flags or insurance-less drivers you mention. I also don't hear the blaring music very often.

We take much pride in our diversity and find the monochromatic population in your neck of the woods rather clique-ish and, well, boring.

The community is vibrant...people still leave their homes and talk to their neighbors...walk to the parks and shops instead of driving the Lexus SUV to the nearest of the dozen starbucks!

The town is close to Chicago, other major cities, shopping, job centers, highways, parks, schools, places of worship etc.

The Illinois prairie path weaves through town, there is a train station and a history museum....the City has partnered with developers to re-invigorate the downtown area.

Crime rate is one of the lowest in the area. There's also that Airport...the third busiest in Illinois after ORD and MDW.

Sure there are Mexican flags...and Irish and Italian and many others. There is even a Mexican independence day parade...but also a 4th of July one.

We also have real Mexican food, not just Taco Bell....but my favorite is this little Italian joint downtown where you can feed a family for $20.

I can see why you're so upset though...our way of life is much different than yours in Lake Zurich or Lake County at large...where people have isolated and insulated themselves in their million dollar homes...gotten away from their fellow man...hell, Long Grove doesn't even have street addresses for added privacy. Plus you guys have the worst case of NIMBY ever...there are no highways because no one wants them close to their McMansion....so there are constant traffic jams as all the roads leading anywhere in and out of your area are small 2 lane county roads.

No Thanks.

I'll take my Mexican flags and immigrants over your whitewashed racist neighborhood any day.

UGLY

Those things are ugly, hopefully they'll be vandalized.

Even worse is these boxes are providing an OBSOLETE technology! DSL sucks compared to cable and FIOS. Why do DSL ISPs use PPPoE? It's so annoying and only creates more potential problems.

My cable connection is 2 to 3 times faster than any DSL product, and I don't have any nasty ugly looking boxes near my home.

If those boxes were for something worthwhile like FTTH, then that's a different story.
