Comments on news posted 2007-10-23 10:14:19: ISPs such as Cox, Earthlink and Charter have all tinkered with DNS redirection services. Such services usually redirect users who mistype URLs to an ISP-run search page (complete with referral links) instead of giving a traditional error message. ..

 Iwould not mind it if

I would not mind it if it was not filled up with useless and worthless ads but the chances of that happening NONE

I don't mind it. If I mistype an address and it helps me find it, that's all that matters.

Except that the internet is not just the web.

DNS has a purpose. Returning a failure code for a non existent domain is a requirement for DNS. Verizon breaks this.

Exactly, I was about to post the same.

The only acceptable solution is to provide an option of DNS that works correctly for customers who need it. The "web only" people can default to the false-results scam and those who prefer true DNS would be given an address of an un-tampered DNS server.

Check it out

Check out the Opt Out instructions. The OS instructions stand to screw stuff up as much as fix anything.

Time to roll your own DNS server

Forget these asshats and their spam ridden redirects

Run your own DNS server, it's, faster, easy, and FREE!

Treewalk DNS server for Windows »ntcanuck.com/

Bind9 comes with most Linux distributions »www.bind9.net/

If you have several computers in your house only one needs to be a DNS server and set the rest to try that computer first.

no thanks I will use opendns and support them more then anything else , when you dns fails you need to be able to climb the ladder to a good dns server anyway.

Thats why you have the option set more than one DNS server.

If the first one fails it will automatically try the next one...

I set Treewalk (localhost) first and OpenDNS next. Besides who knows, someday OpenDNS may start doing the same thing.

Re: i use this

yeah but it's slightly faster than OOL's dns from my unscientific test. Getting FIOS on friday so we'll see how it compares to VZ's dns server.

Thanks for the treewalk thing. I was trying to get bind to work with windows but got bored and perused pornography instead. Treewalk is working great and very speedy

Busted is busted

Purely speaking, if the url is wrong then it should display as such, not show some lame-o page that is nothing but an ad portal.

And of course this isn't an ISP specific thing either, applies to any domain anywhere at any time.

The only thing I see I guess is that perhaps it is a tad more friendly than a straight up failure, although I prefer to just get the failure.

This differs from creative 404 pages which at least are hosted within the bounds of a particular site. At least that's the idea anyway.

Hehe

@ssa.gov
Just run your own DNS server.

I run a DNS server on my firewall. I don't use my ISP's DNS servers.

You're kinda missing the point here. We're not talking about whether DNS is fast or slow.

Happens here too

I have Verizon DSL.

I've noticed it's been like this for a few months in Pittsburgh.

They do , thats how they stay alive. I rather a choice to use it or not , in this case I reward them by using it and not opting out.

Not if you configure it not to.

Try this

Blocking these 3 ip addresses prevented the redirect completely here, and Verizon is nothing but scum for doing this.
