| | | Now, that would be stupid to block Google. No trouble pulling up Google, YouTube or Gmail on Cox HSI. YouTube sometimes does load longer than usual but that is because 50 million people are on it.
Google is working on server upgrades and routing traffic all the time so it could be something they are doing.
If you are logged out of iGoogle and YouTube, I found it loads faster.

1 edit | who to blame we haven't been able to load youtube here at work, and it's not because it's restricted. it's not that youtube isn't loading, but it's very very slow to the point where you might think it's not loading if you're not patient. (though google works fine... so i'm sure it's of no relationship).
we've had the routes checked and it was determined to be a routing issue past our 1st level provider and in cogent's route to google. we contacted google and cogent but they haven't fixed it. it's been 3 or 4 weeks now. | |

| I doubt it's something nefarious I have noticed some extremely slow loads from results (particularly cached pages) for several weeks now. Since it's happening to me and my clients on Verizon or Covad wire and VZ, Cov, or OpenDNS routing, I seriously doubt it's traffic shaping by any one ISP. Most likely, it's something gone wrong in the Googleversetinuum™. | |

| There might be another explanation.. Microsoft evilness. M$ built into XP and Vista, a custom DNS client.
I would not be surprised if one of the M$ updates changed something to give the evil empire some sort of advantage. Perhaps one of those stealth updates??
It takes a bit of effort to shut it off.
Startup->Control panel->Administrative tools->Services.
Disable DNS client startup and stop the existing service.
Once the DNS client service is shutdown, DNS resolution behaves like a typical WinXXXX/UNIX system. | |

Running servers is against the TOS of Comcast.
Why people continually do what is clearly banned and then complain about whatever might result from it is way beyond my comprehension.
Undoubtedly..the user is also someone downloading/uploading 400 gigs a month and ruining the service for the rest of those in their neighborhood as well.
All the while, i'm sure they're complaining about it all..and the fact they are even having to pay 42.95 a month for the service.

That's apparently group "L", so there's probably 11 other sets of four, maybe more.
WORTH NOTING: Each of those four expire in 131 seconds, meaning, those are supposed to be flushed from my DNS' cache after that, a subsequent query will force it to "get off its ass" and ask Google again.
Enter Comcast. Their DNS servers are so f(reak)ing "lazy", if a domain (www.karels.org, for one) is not in their cache, it won't even bother to look it up. Mix that with what Google does, and guess what!

if what you're saying about comcasts' dns servers not looking up entries it doesn't know, that's pretty pathetic on their part and i'm not sure why anyone would do business with them if they had a choice. | |

Web farm for www.l.google.com has TTL of 5 mins. If they need to swap out a box from the farm, propagation will take 5 mins. That's all there's to it. Yahoo web farm has TTL of 1 mins, for example.

That being said, if I caught some loser stealing copyrighted material on one of our connections, and I had a Sandvine box that could degrade his traffic, I would let loose on him.
We're a WISP, and these "something for nothing" mentality losers would be the death of our network. (yes, I'm talking to you, BT thieves)
That's why when we catch someone cooking their connection, we politely ask them to stop before we jerk their connection out from under them. | |
