It would be easier to bill, ATT would get additional revenue from the increased MRC, and no one would have to worry about going over and ending up with a $100,000 bill. -- {Insert Something Witty Here} |

They are trying to milk the iPhony cash cow for as long as they can before people wake up and realize that there are more cost effective or robust options. |

Well, like others said, they are milking the iPhone for everything they can. But I also heard that the Blackberry compresses the data, and the iPhone doesn't. |

Sorry, this may sound stupid, but can't you just get a blackberry plan and put the sim chip into the i-phone? |

I've heard BlackBerry does their own data networks. So if you are in a country that supports BlackBerry you aren't roaming.
Anyone comment? |

| It's not a separate network, it is the way the APN is handled. Blackberry uses a different APN then standard WAP or Internet. So you use the same GPRS/EDGE network but you connect somewhere else. I cannot find the details on where I saw this again, so I'm beginning to wonder if I was in a daze. |

said by StanleyChan :Sorry, this may sound stupid, but can't you just get a BlackBerry plan and put the SIM chip into the iPhone? Not without unlocking. The way Apple and AT&T have it set up, the only legit way to activate an iPhone is using a SIM that is in it. You can't just take a SIM card from another device (even if it is associated with AT&T account) and use it in an iPhone (well, an exception to this could be if the SIM is from another iPhone). They do allow you to upgrade an existing AT&T account to iPhone (without a contract extension I believe), but during the activation process they deactivate your old SIM and associate the one in the iPhone with your account. Of course, you can still use that SIM from an activated iPhone in a BlackBerry (or any other unlocked GSM phone).
Of course, there is a way around it, which is to unlock the iPhone and use it with your BlackBerry plan or another GSM carrier altogether. However, should something go wrong, don't expect any help from Apple or AT&T should they figure out that you modded that iPhone. --

I have a corporate crackberry which I avoid using as much as possible and recently a coworker of mine let me have his 8gig iphone for 200 dollars just because he wasn't using it, I unlocked the iphone and started to use my crackberry's sim card... Now is when I'm really using the my corporate mobile number.
Does this mean that I can abuse the hell out the iphone's data services and not have my boss come out and bitch at me?
Does cingular know that all of a sudden my crackberry turned into an iphone? |

Now, if your boss is paying per byte and you end up pulling more data using iPhone than you did with BlackBerry, you'll run a higher bill and your boss will come out bitching at you.
said by flyingjoey :Does Cingular know that all of a sudden my CrackBerry turned into an iPhone? Good question. My guess is that from their side they cannot really track what device your SIM card is tied to, they can only link your SIM card to the voice minutes used with it as well as amount of data pulled, then cross-check it against your account and bill you accordingly. I think that's why they made Apple come up with this activation process that allows iPhones to be activated only with a particular series of SIM cards, and not with any others (even if they are tied to AT&T accounts). -- Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies... I use the BB8830 to websearch quite a bit overseas and when I was in Taiwan, out of curiosity I used Ipchicken . com to find out if it would show the foreign IP address and it shows up the same as here in the US c000-000.blackberry.net (used 000-000 for example purposes). I do believe the web requests are routed over the blackberry server. |

I can't comment for all Blackberries but with Verizon, all you have to do is have an international data plan enabled and that allows unlimited data to be pushed through a particular countries GPRS network. Blackberry doesn't have their own "data" networks.
Boy is the IPOD a major ripoff for international data. I don't know why someone wouldn't go with a BB from T-Mobile or Cingular (or Verizon / Sprint 8830 for that matter). |

Yes they know what device your Sim card is in. The unique to each device IMEI gets sent back to the carrier. |

| Two Questions
1. Will a treo sim work in an i-phone? I don't see a reason why not other than if the i-phone locks to a specific sim, which can also be unlocked.
2. I don't recall the data plan being device specific in the contract, so why would I need to pay more for the i-phone data service if I manage to get the sim to work in the i-phone? |

becuz blackberry compresses data, makes it cheaper to deliver the same webpages iPhone actually pulls the entire page in full detail, which runs up more in data charges, and also why pages take sooo long to load on an iPhone, makes u wish for a dialup modem, LOL. Cheers a333 |
