Name

I'd rather see it named the G-Spot. That way, if you loose your phone, you can Google the term "Where is the G-Spot" and it will give you a Google map of it's current location. Of course, some people still will have a hard time finding it no matter how hard they look.

it's about time

samsung makes money on the hardware
google makes money on the OS and apps
cell service providers make money on plans

and consumers FINALLY get phones that
can do whatever the heck they want, and
American's can go back to innovating
the hell out of the rest of the World!

iPhones are nice, but a gPhone is what
would make me break a contract to get.
- when version 1.1 hits, of course

Now if only

..they could get all the electronic phone manufacturers to agree to use the same bloody charger technology, pins and cable we could cut millions in costs and waste every year.

Come on Google are you listening?

Hmmmm

This just might get me into a cell phone at last. As a hamradio operator I have not felt the need for one any one I want to talk to is on the other end of a radio. We will have to see. One thing about this Google is like the 900 pound gorilla it can sit any where it wants, and there is not a damn thing the chimpanzees can do about it.

But will it run windows? All we need now is the M-Phone, ATTaPhone, and the V-Phone to make the circle complete.

Google makes their official announcement - Android

A broad alliance of leading technology and wireless companies today joined forces to announce the development of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders.

Consumers should expect the first phones based on Android to be available in the second half of 2008.

Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt. "Today's announcement is more ambitious than any single 'Google Phone' that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks.
Weird with the name of Android.

Here is the list of the companies in the coalition:
Aplix (www.aplixcorp.com), Ascender Corporation (www.ascendercorp.com), Audience (www.audience.com), Broadcom (www.broadcom.com), China Mobile (www.chinamobile.com), eBay (www.ebay.com), Esmertec (www.esmertec.com), Google (www.google.com), HTC (www.htc.com), Intel (www.intel.com), KDDI (www.kddi.com), LivingImage (www.livingimage.jp), LG (www.lge.com), Marvell (www.marvell.com), Motorola (www.motorola.com), NMS Communications (www.nmscommunications.com), Noser (www.noser.com), NTT DoCoMo, Inc. (www.nttdocomo.com), Nuance (www.nuance.com), Nvidia (www.nvidia.com), PacketVideo (www.packetvideo.com), Qualcomm (www.qualcomm.com), Samsung (www.samsung.com), SiRF (www.sirf.com), SkyPop (www.skypop.com), SONiVOX (www.sonivoxrocks.com), Sprint Nextel (www.sprint.com), Synaptics (www.synaptics.com), TAT - The Astonishing Tribe (www.tat.se), Telecom Italia (www.telecomitalia.com), Telefónica (www.telefonica.es), Texas Instruments (www.ti.com), T-Mobile (www.t-mobile.com), Wind River (www.windriver.com).

Here is the OFFICIAL web site for the handset alliance:

And Sprint's announcement of support for the open source mobile handset:

Looks like USAToday missed the boat on its inside info by quite a bit.

The Google Blog also has something to say on the subject of the new phone alliance:
»googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/···one.html
Despite all of the very interesting speculation over the last few months, we're not announcing a Gphone. However, we think what we are announcing -- the Open Handset Alliance and Android -- is more significant and ambitious than a single phone. In fact, through the joint efforts of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, we hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today.

We'll see how open this thing really stays once money becomes involved. Additionally isn't Google going to be putting advertisements on these things? According to the article at CNN they were.

The New G-Phone? We can only hope.

Just think what this would mean for Google. They can mostly by pass the major ISP's and their threats of charging Google for access. A place for them to place ad's, music services, etc, etc. If this comes about this is going to rock the wireless digital world.

It took me until two years ago to finally get one. I used auto-patch when in the car and VOIP at home. However, after one too many frustrations of needing a working payphone and not finding one I finally bit the bullet and signed on with T-Mobile during a Labor Day promotion back in 2005. I have not regretted it.

Now if the Google phone mandates the use of SIM cards or their CDMA equivalent R-UIM's then it will be a fantastic package.

Oh my

If I read the way this open source system is going to work any of you who might have stock in any of the pre-paid cell phone services should dump their stock now. The Android phone is going to kill them off. These pre-paid services have always been a total rip-off.
