TCH_XP1138 Where are you?

Where are our automated corporate defenders to laud this initiate that is pro consumer because it is, after all, targeted at the consumer?

NV

edit: There are few things more entertaining than posts who chide me for failing to get the sarcasm of the OP article;
while they, in turn, fail to get the sarcasm within this post.

Thanks!

Hm.. this is a fake memo. It's not real. It's not true. So you won't see any "automatic corporate defenders" here, as this is a joke.

Maybe you'd be getting a few responses if this wasn't a lame attempt at humor by Maximum PC (they're still around?).

Do you smell that? You just stepped into a giant, steaming pile of satire/sarcasm. But in your case, it's more like sarc[h]asm because the chasm between your understanding of sarcasm and satire is infinite.

Well then they deserve to get upset because they apparently didn't read the article here either before posting. Did you?

Although it is a parody memo, it's actually not funny in this case, because a lot of it is just what ISPs will try if they are not forced to respect network neutrality.

That may seem alarmist, but in fact the makers of "traffic shaping" gear have been advertising to ISPs that their devices can give fine-grained control of IP traffic, so that the ISPs can control different types of traffic separately, and charge differently for different kinds of packets on a per-user basis.

You would get a bill itemized by what you were accessing - websites in category "A"; a websites in category "B"; Youtube videos; email; bittorrent or other filesharing; VOIP; etc. - and by the byte, by the minute, by the time of day; at various rates according to a complex, constantly-changing schedule - whatever they can think of.

And corporations are sociopaths, so the ISPs will certainly try whatever they can get away with if they think it will maximize profit. The only thing holding them back is the threat of neutrality legislation.

Geez . . . don't give them any more ideas

Those of you who are old enough to remember the Mad Magazine spoof of razor blades back in the 50's & 60's, with 3, 4 & 5 blades on the razors are now shaking their heads with amazement to see that these razors are now reality.

I don't want to see that happen with Comcast . . . poking fun by suggesting something completely off the wall, and then seeing Comcast actually implement it.

Last laugh is probably on us, as parts of the 'parody memo' probably have roots in real ones.

If it does come to pass, just think of all the cheap fun we can have with Archie & Gopher!

it may be funny now...

...but not so much when they start doing stuff like this on a regular basis.

this sounds exactly like what the ILECs would like to do with the internet - every transaction and every bit monetized.

Any takers?

After the recent brouhaha over Comcast's traffic shaping practices, Maximum PC has a bit of fun at the company's expense. They've penned a fantastic fake internal memo from a company executive to Comcast's board of directors, outlining their plans for broadband domination.

Any bets on how many folks fail to read these first two sentences and think this is a real memo?

How is this News?

Usually I'm willing to give BBR the benefit of the doubt...but, what exactly is news here? I mean, I just see an internet parody here. These are made all the time on YouTube - nothing special really...or maybe I just don't get it.

the point here is, is to keep the BS throttling and BT 'blockage' that Comcast is doing in the front of the news as a way to pressure them to stop (or at least fix things)

I, for one, found this parody quite funny (and seriously hope Comcast gets no ideas from it) and right on time.. It shows how bad a Mega-Corp could be.

I understand the message, but I just don't get how it's news. I mean, had Comcast said something, maybe...but at the moment, there's nothing really new or informative here.

Put it this way...do you think any other news/information outlet would pay much nevermind every time somebody just made a new anti-(insert cause here) banner?

It makes fun of Comcast(or any corporation for that matter) and that is BBR's favorite front page activity.

Well, there are legitamite developments in the Comcast sandvine/blocking issue. All the prior news posts involved some sort of news release/development over at Comcast. This news bit just adds nothing at all to the situation.

Yes, and that is oh so wrong because we all know that corporate America NEVER does anything that should be poked fun at... Corporate America is perfect and should never be criticized...
[/ sarcasm]

If you hate the BBR spin so much, why don't you go and someplace like the Verizon Policy Blog, which fits nicely with your bias.

This is pretty funny due to the fact that if they could, they would do this. I would love to see some wacky packages stickers based on the the telecom/cable industry.

Are guys ran by George Soros

What we have is a story on a fake memo, a parody on a fake (manufactured )news story about Comcast Caps. How ironic.

Re: Are guys ran by George Soros

Journalism in America is dead... You expect too much. In a world with Fox News and CNN, you should really lower your expectations of the news you get.

Telnet? Hey man, what about chargen?

quote:
The memo also advises the company move to a "per-protocol pricing structure," where users pay more for the honor of using more popular Internet protocols. Telnet, which only comprises 0.0001% of overall Comcast network traffic, would only cost Comcast customers $0.02/month.
This had me laughing this morning.

Yeah, but that's already costing customers more than $0.02 a month, considering how many people on Comcast must get DDoS'd in a week...
