Comments on news posted 2007-11-09 15:16:48: With home bandwidth speeds ramping up for most of us, how we get broadband video content into the home isn't as important as how we get broadband video from our office to the living room. ..

Cool

That's Nice, might reduce my need for 3rd party software but I've been able to play almost any video that my computer can decode for months thanks to
»tversity.com/home
On my XBox 360
It's not hard at all to install.
Would be very nice of microsoft and sony to make it easier but I'm not dying for this feature.

I'll Buy the 360 Then

If that's true. I've been using XBMC on my old Xbox as my media center. But, this could make me change.

How about X264/MKV?

Give me Xbox 360 support for X264 in Matroska container, 1080p and DD+. Then I'll be in heaven.

Ah, "transformers.2007.1080p.hddvd.x264-hv" Such a bad movie, but so amazing looking in Full HD.

Re: Cool

Works over Lan or wireless at full network speed
No Xbox Mod required
Detects it as a windows pc with windows media connect software.

You're right. DivX and Xvid is getting long in the tooth. X264 is where it's at.

Re: Cool

I tried tversity and I had some issues with it. It kept telling me everything was unsupported or would keep timing out the connection from the computer to the 360.

I use Transcode 360 now and I have no had a single problem.

I have been using XBMC for years now, the only thing it cant do is HiDef stuff, which is mostly TV shows off Discovery & PBS. It also cant do .TS/.TP files. I have a HTPC (Dual Core AMD system) running Media Portal, but its just not the same as XBMC. I would really like to replace it with a better system. If they do this, ill jump on the Xbox 360 bandwagon, but basically use it for media only (my original xbox is never used to play games).

I have a couple of original Xboxes running XBMC. My 5 year old likes to play games on them, but othewiuse the system goes unused except as a media center. My 11 and 8 year old kids love streaming music and movies from the server. They think it's great that the music they listen to on their PC can be cranked over the HTS.

Yeah...

We need these to play HD divx and xvid before I'd even think about replacing my HTPC.

Hook PC up to LCD TV

Doesn't anyone else have their PC hooked up to a fairly large LCD tv? You can surf the net in your comfy chair as well as watch Joost, Joox and others doing this. Get a hand held mouse, Firefox with Mouse gestures(to enlarge text right click and motion downwards) and enjoy the net from your recliner.

I prefer such to having a box solution.

And that is exactly why it boggles my mind that Microsoft hasn't already added support. It would help sell the damn thing.
Despite what anyone claims, pirated material and porn are the top driving forces in people paying for faster and faster internet connections. You don't need, and simply can't justify the cost of a 7000/1000 internet connection for web browsing and email. It's for the content downloaded.

Add Divx/XVid (and in my opinion h.264) support to the XBox and Playstation, and watch them start flying off the shelf.

And to the issue of TVersity and others like it, yes it works, but you are still transcoding the content. I've played with just about every piece of software out there, and I can still tell the difference in video quality. Thats after you get past needing a decent enough host PC to actually do the transcoding.

Re: Hook PC up to LCD TV

It would be so amazing if the 360 was Xvid compatible.

That's because everyone is not as technically inclined as someone like you and me so they need a more simple method to do something like this. That's why Xbox live arcade and the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console are such a big hit. Everyone doesn't know how to set up Rom software on their pc or connect the computer to the TV.

TVersity works in any number of ways. In my case, it installs as a plug-in on my NAS device. My PCs see my NAS as a network share; my XBox360 sees it as a media server; my iPod sees it as an iTunes radio station. TVersity rocks. And, if a given media streaming client doesn't natively understand a format, TVersity transcodes to a format that the client *does* understand. Thus, while Divx/Xvid support has been rumored for XBox 360 for nearly a year now, it hasn't mattered because TVersity's transcoded it for longer than that.

Hmm... Sounds like when I was first playing with things last year. The problem was because much of my media was stored in AAC. Once I: A) updated my XBox360 firmware; and, B) downloaded the iPod CODECs from the XBox360 Live Marketplace, all of the red slashed-circles went away.

I still get the occasional file that plays oddly, but they're files that my wife either got from friends or via Soul Seek. So, I'm not sure how they were recorded, in the first place. They play, they just play slow and "stuttery".
