Comments on news posted 2007-11-15 18:17:04: Qwest recently unveiled that they'll be spending $300 million over the next two years to bring 20Mbps VDSL to around 1.9 million customers. That's a far cry from the $6.5 and $23 billion AT&T and Verizon (respectively) are spending on upgrades. ..

They'd be wise...

To hold off until they see the success (lack of it) with AT&T's IPTV, and learn from all the issues that they're experiencing.
20Mbps VDSL would be great, 25Mbps IPTV + Internet still isn't a mature product, IMO.

Not just VDSL

Qwest recently unveiled that they'll be spending $300 million over the next two years to bring 20Mbps VDSL to around 1.9 million customers.
Actually it's FTTN ADSL2+ and also VDSL.

Qwest has had VDSL in certain markets for a while; however they're now adding FTTN ADSL2+ to the mix.

DSL

Just needs to die already. there will be very few people who's lines/distances qualify for 25m.

Re: Not just VDSL

ddb... what's the difference, to the consumer, the end result of FTTN ADSL2+ & VDSL as far as speeds and service offerings?

Re: DSL

Deploying VRAD's / RT's aren't cheap, and line conditioning needs to be done... As far as TV goes, its a stop gap/temp solution until a better solution (FTTH or FTTH gear becomes cheaper).

For Qwest or in general? Because you'd be amazed at how many people are within a mile of their crossbox.

$300 Million for 1.9 million customers

Did I read that right? They figure it will cost about $150 per customer to bring 20Mbps VDSL? That seems low....

Funny that you mentioned it. Forbes in this article describes uverse 'success' the same way
»www.forbes.com/markets/emergingm···s43.html

quote:
In September Oppenheimer analyst Thomas Eagan told Forbes.com: "Given the lack of success of AT&T's U-Verse rollout, it seems to us a matter of when, not if, AT&T acquires EchoStar."

Financial analysts are starting to pay more attention...

In general. you can live right across the street from your switch and STILL be more than 4K WIRE FEET from it

Naysayers and Doomsayers

First to let you all now my Nieghborhood is already VDSL capable. I'm less then 900 Ft from the Box. I have IPTV. I am enjoying the TV. My fiancee loves the Channels that she can get especially the Music stations.

DSL is not dead. People who are ignorant to a majority of emerging techs or just jump on the bandwagon usually make comments of this nature. Until you fully understand this you will never be able to a educated decision. Please don't tell me how many degrees you have or what type of degrees they are. All I will hear is blah blah blah. I know many people without degrees who are extremly knowledgeable about the industry and how it works.

I do not work for QWEST nor for any Telco. i am a true customer so do not say the reason i'm saying this is because they are my bread and butter. IMHO they provide a better service and price point. Although my speeds might not be as high as Cable providers I do know that what I sign up for I will get. Not a range of speed depending on the time of day

I have had High speed internet since 97. Cable was my first choice and had more problems with them in 1 year then I have had with QWEST in 6 years Weather it be ADSL or VDSL. only 3 time has my Internet gone down Twice was because i was doing a service change and then it was only down for 1-2 hours and when I wasn't home. My interleave is only 4ms But even with is was in the 30's I preferred the more stable connection vs the unstable with no interleave.

my 2cents

Re: DSL

But most people aren't. Otherwise DSL wouldn't work for so many.
