I lost my job to broad band

I had a steady paper route where I peddled around and delivered newspapers. People didn't renew their subscriptions and choose to read the paper in front of their CRT's and I was found obsolete.

I then held a job seeking donations for a child abuse charity door to door afterwards. I was surplussed too when online giving grew.

Now I hold advertisements on street corners. Carrying a large sign advertising condos at the moment. I would like to see broadband take this away from me

Ok, you need to start looking for another gig. My company is currently working on a holographic emitter that will be placed on a street corner and will produce a three-dimensional image of a person carrying a sign. The content will transmitted via wireless broadband.

Sorry.

The state or city by-laws might make your job illegal.
There's been a push to ban these in the Santa Clarita area due to their distraction (i.e. sign spinners standing at the corner of intersections).

Statistics

Ain't they wunnerful?

I notice that they talk about an increase in jobs in the smaller areas because anyone can be an international player with the net (and by inference move to cheaper quarters in the 'sticks'). Where did that work come from? The Internet did not 'magically' create it. Someplace, somewhere, someone lost a job because of the Internet allowed a company to relocate a function to a less expensive area or to access another company in a less expensive area as readily as they did when they all were within walking distance.

The real people lobbying for those laws are telcos and cablecos. Its an unprecedented merger between the 2 to form a vast comspiracy to put ninjaturtle out of work!

It is the growth in jobs that spurs on broadband useage.

Without jobs a) there is less need for broadband. b) fewer people can afford broadband.

Umm, $10 a month DSL? Cheaper than phone service, or are you talking about cable which some people probably can't afford.

The cheapest DSL from Verizon I see is $15/mo. (price for life) or $18/mo. (one year) for 768/128 Kbps.

It may qualify as an 'always on' connection but broadband is a bit of a stretch.

Who is the provider and what are the details of the $10/mo. package you are citing?

There are places where DSL isn't available yet cable is. There are also probably places where the opposite is true although I've yet to observe this. So, those people can't get the $10-$20/mo. DSL.

But, is paying $70/mo. really that hard? It's roughly the cost of a POTS line (with CID, unmetered domestic calls, and cheaper international calling).

If someone can't afford $70/mo., then that person has a lot of problems and can't afford to live.

I'm not saying you should pay $70/mo. if something that's $30/mo. is "good enough" and available, but is $70/mo. really too much?

Useless Information

The Sacramento Regional Research Institute, which investigated the relationship between broadband use, job growth and payroll statewide, found 14,853 new jobs [...]

Whatta complete and utter waste of space. The writer of this byline deserves a thousand lashes with a wet noodle for being so idiotic.

Here is the report in question if anyone is interested in reading it. It's a good thing it's just a .pdf otherwise I'd be wiping my ass with it because that is just about the only thing it's good for. Anyone can make the same rosy claims for just about anything else. Just shake a Magic 8-ball and write the report just like SRRI apparently did.
