Comments on news posted 2007-11-29 16:56:54: As we mentioned the other day, the nation's fourth largest phone provider (soon to be fifth, supplanted by Comcast VoIP) is now offering "naked" DSL, or DSL without mandatory phone service. ..

why?

Where in America CAN you call up the telephone company and get ONLY DSL for a reasonable price?

I can call Cox and get pretty much any of their packages with no TV or phone required - ~$60/month for about 7/512 here.

If I could call up ATT right now and get just DSL at 3/512, for ~$20-30/month, I'd consider it...

Guess none of them realize the potential customers they could get... ESPECIALLY in a college town where most students (and a growing number of adults) have ONLY cellular phones.

Oh well. Guess that (and faster speeds + more coverage) is why most people I know have cable internet around here...

In NYC you don't even have to call. Verizon lets you sign up for dry-loop DSL right on their website.

Of course, this assumes that your order makes it past pre-qualification for distance and service area.

Dry-loop runs you $20 for 768/128 and $35 for 3/768 service.

Well that's nice, I never liked those power play deals with one company anyway...

Odd...

It's a little weird... I think if you're not using a phone a small fee to the telco is all that should be needed (e.g. $5/month) or even transparent to you and have Embarq cover the cost to the telco as part of your service. This is a scary way to retain customers because it makes people pretty happy with service wonder why they shouldn't gripe.

Re: 3 in 1 deals

I'm with you... Verizon FIOS Triple Play package now requires a 2 year commitment. $175 charge if you drop it after the 30 day acceptance period...
