we all know that better broadband will just allow pirates to steal more content faster - I imagine hollywood must be gearing up right now to defeat this nefarious proposal. |

4 edits | Our governor doesn't get involved in anything that doesn't involve taxpayers spending money through massive bond measures.
I can see it now...Prop FU, $2.1 billion for fiber deployment (that will never happen).
He and the far left legislature continue to spend money hand over fist and despite us being in the hole by BILLIONS year after year, the budget continues to balloon out of control papered over by massive borrowing.
No, there is going to be a ton gov't money to be had in some form at the end of all this bloviating. A few years ago it was billions in taxpayer money we didn't have for stem cell research and now it will be millions if not billions for the telcos and cable giants.
If he wants to stimulate growth and jobs...cut the budget to what it was in 2000 and cut taxes. Businesses are fleeing not because they can't download Pr0N but that the cost of business here is outrageous thanks to insanely high taxation, workers comp rates, ambulance chasers and bull crap CAL-EPA regulations that are all completely out of control.
There is nothing more portable than rich people and money...and they're the ones creating all the jobs. Unfortunately thanks to our beloved hacks in Sacramento they're all moving to Nevada and Arizona which don't wage class warfare on job creators. |

| Let Verizon do it
I have had it with bond measures in CA. He gave Verizon a statewide franchise to wire most of the state with fiber. Give them a deadline to get it done or yank the permit and give it to the cable cos. That will hurry them up. Let the Verizon shareholders pay for this. Not the CA tax payers. Oh also bonds are not free people. We have to issue them and pay the interest on them. And that is already billions of dollars for past bonds issued. Voters are not falling for this "freebie" bond crap like thy did a few years ago. I just heard 80% of the water bond money for water projects was not yet allocated. Cute. Issue bonds then dont use the money. This state is out of control and is an example of what happens when dems run things. As far as bonds yes some do squeak by but only then the ads on tv (for voter zombies) say they are to benefit the "children" "first responders" or puppies |

For crying out loud, why can't we just leave the money where it's made? Why does this country have to CONSTANTLY stick its nose into OUR business, take our money and give it to someone else?
The LAST place our money should go is Ma Bell redux. Isn't AT&T making enough money to fund its own deployments? If rural towns want broadband, how about we let the local residents vote and pass a tax to fund it? |

1 edit | Bring it on! Use ALL the road construction money!!
Bring on the fiber!! And to pay for it, use the road constuction bond money, thereby saving the environment by reducing global warming, increasing national security (by reducing foreign oil dependence to fuel the millions of cars in CA), generating new leading-edge technology jobs and increasing productivity!
Fiber is a long-term investment toward building the next "world", and yes, it's going to cost money. From a growth standpoint (growth creates new jobs), our physical world, well the US, is mostly developed. We desperately need another economic pursuit to keep millions of people employed and through their efforts generating added value.
Obviously, the Internet represents the next new world to be constructed. It's either going to be US leading the way or US chasing everyone else. The US invented the Internet, let's not loose the edge. Let's get moving with continuing to create the innovations and sharpening the edge so that we own the valuable new technology and can export it, at a premium, to other countries so the national debt and trade imbalance can be materially reduced.
There's no reason the US can't have 20 more Goggle, Cisco, Microsoft-like (add your most impressive here) companies with remarkable success stories, balance sheets and ecstatic shareholders and employees.
Let's sprint to put in place the infrastructure to make progess happen! Long term, the investment will pay for itself many times over and in many ways previously unattainable! |

| We can't wait that long. Every day we delay is another day we fall further behind. Just look at the giant lead the asian countries have over the US in the cell phone device market. Given our technical expertise as a nation, we should own that market!
Personally, I'd rather have a little government involvement in stoking the kindle of progress and know that others are benefiting by being gainfully employed, than experience the loss of high-paying jobs and the future opportunities the associated innovation brings along, than flat outright object to a funding approach that would have the greatest potential for success.
I'm just as fearful and unconvinced of the "efficiency" of government, but at least give support to the govt funding the project and then leasing out the infrastrcture to multiple (not just two or three), competitive operators, just as DSL is provided by multiple ISP's (AT&T owning the lines isn't necessarily optimum, but many companies are making money subleasing, none the less).
Deploying fiber throughout California would be a massive financial undertaking that private companies couldn't afford and their shareholders wouldn't have the stomach or patience for the very long term risk/reward.
Just as roads are built with public money, do the same with fiber which is simply the next step interestingly along the exact same physical paths (much cross country fiber is laid alongside rail road paths, which followed stage coach lines, which followed horse trails, etc.)
Let's not get stuck in the Internet horse and buggies days, let's get on building the new world now! |
