This would be good if....

They could failover to a CDMA 1x/EVDO and WiFi service on datacards and handsets/devices (when they become available).

Does the modem need to be stationary?

I heard that *clearwire* modems had to be stationary to get a signal, that if your roaming in the back seat of a car, you wont get service. Same thing apply to Sprints?

PS
I had actual sprint reps at my work (I work for a small cable company that does VOIP), none of them knew about this service, had no idea what I was talking about.

From what I read, initial beta testing by Sprint/Xohm will support 802.16 stationary Wimax. But will migrate quickly to 802.16e mobile Wimax throughout 2008 and in to 2009.

Sprint Connect - no issues upgrade to XOHM

I signed up for a sprint connect plan a couple months ago. I did the 2 year contract but had them add language to the contract allowing me to switch to XOHM when it becomes available at no penalty - even if the plan costs less.

I had to go through many layers at Sprint until I found someone who even knew what WiMax/XOHM was but once I did - there was no problem getting the language I wanted

Re: This would be good if....

Samsung will be releasing an EVDO/WiMAX combo card. But don't know if it will be available for the 'soft' launch. Maybe not until the rollout.

Just a guess but I'd think it would be $40-$50/month for WiMAX only cards and $60/month for EVDO/WiMAX combo cards. But if Sprint were smart, they do the combo for under $50/month too to draw users to WiMAX with EVDO as a fallback.

Re: Does the modem need to be stationary?

Sprint is rolling out true mobile WiMAX. Clearwire will upgrade to mobile, probably next year.

Sprint demonstrated the mobile handoff between sites on a Chicago River boat ride demo during WiMAX World in Oct.

It will be truly mobile (802.16e) but I think it has issues handing off over 60mph. That may not be fixed until 802.16m.
