sensational headline

The headline is meant to be sensational and spark a reaction "File Sharing Blocked on Western Digital Storage Devices" when in reality it should read "File Sharing Blocked on Western Digital Storage Devices when using their file sharing application"

You can store any type of file you want on the drive, just like any other drive. WD has developed their own file sharing software that you can choose to install, or not. This software does not allow the sharing of these types of files.

Feel free to use any other file sharing application you want. No is forcing you to install WD sharing software.

Linux Hackable?

I'm just waiting for some Linux hacker to trash the software on this thing and write a new OS for it.

I give it a few weeks to a month.

i wish you people who said they will boycott WD for this article had a brain and could read an article and understand how this software works...

See it's not about that at all. It comes down to control. Who has it, who needs it and who uses it. When you buy a product you expect it to do what you want. WD on the other hand, is saying we don't trust our customers. Instead of being upfront about what their software does they hide it. They advertise certain features that need this software without explaining all the consequences. Only after they are found out do they admit to what this software truly can do.

People always talk about malware and viruses. If this doesn't qualify I'm not sure what could then. This is why people here are so animated against WD. Unknowingly they are giving up control to a 3rd party that is not in their interest at least and downright dangerous to their security. Now most of us here would not have a problem doing DBAN ect. to get what we want. Most families where this stuff is targeted to could not. The amount of PR and sales damage this will incur is enormous. The public wants to control what they have at home. Not to have a backdoor that plays nanny to them.

My last WD drive is a 120GB 7200 I got years ago still runs like a top. As far as I'm concerned that is the last one I'll be buying.

Your right. DSLR is so dense. How many people here swore they will never buy Intel again after the Processor Serial Number was introduced?

Whats the problem if you cant share but download. it hurts the file sharing network but may protect you. Just an out there thought.

Personally i normally go with whatever has a longer warranty. i used to be a maxtor fan years ago but i usually go samsung now.

Also just format it and ignore their software.

format it

If you are so paranoid just format the darn drive.

And just becuase you have a large hard drive doesnt mean you have to be doing something illegal. Maybe you are out of space and want the biggest out there. Maybe you do video editing and need ample space for the raw hd footage (lots of space). Maybe you are backing up your cds and dvds to the hdd so yo dont need to put the disc in.

Seems a smart move

This restricted software looks like a reasonable attempt to avoid future legal action from the RIAA and such. It demonstrates "due diligence" in not promoting widespread file-sharing.

Any reasonably adept user can circumvent such software, but that is the user's liability, not WD's.

The drive would be a perfect match for Vista, as it too is
defective by design.

Seems a massive campaign to tag this drive on commercial
websites (for those that use such) with 'DRM' or 'defective
by design' is in order.

Re: Seagate rulez!!

All I want my hard drive out of the box to do is store data noth9ing else. If I want more software I will get it. I just want a dumb storage device.
Now exception would be for me if I want raid. Then software specific to do raid and nothing else. Basically software geared toward storage that is it.
Thanks,

The software you give me better be drive related or storage related nothing else. Or better have mucho opt outs. In a business situation this would be bad. Period. Hope there was a warning, eula or opt outs.

As said..

This only affects if you're using their 'Anywhere Access' software. The drive works just fine as a standard network drive, without installing or using their software. I've had no problems moving any sorts of files onto it with a local network.

The Anywhere Access, as has been said, is a WAN type solution so you can share your drive 'over the internet'. If you have no intention of using that function or software, this doesn't apply.

They just lost my business.

I am in charge of selecting and recommending I.T. purchases at my job. I had just ordered 50 WD drives of various sizes and types. I will be cancelling that order and changing it to the equivalent Seagate drives.

I will not support any company that is willing to jump on the "hackers are everywhere\we must protect the children\we're losing billions of dollars" bandwagon. If At&t keeps up the crap too I will not be renewing our T1 contract and instead look into alternative methods. When is someone going to take a real stand to these business practices and make someone financially liable.

News "FLASH"

People don't want DRM software installed on their hard drives.
Also, you know what would really take the cake... if it were re-bagged as a SONY hard drive (haha).. remember Sony's time after time fiasco's with DRM? minidisc, rootkits, macrovision (one of the first to endorse vhs drm). Well other hard drive makers better learn from WD's mistake and not try this crap. Once news of these products hits product review sights.. sales will drop like news of a lead contaminated product. If asia continues to ship crap.. we'll just buy much less of it.. not a good thing for them.

Re: News "FLASH"

This is nuts. I've bought Western Digital hard drives but I'm not going to consider buying these new DRM'd drives. How many of you create short movie clips with your digital camera? I often transfer these images around. No copyright infringement is occurring even though I'm using on their "incompatible" file formats.

What a joke.

My preteen and teen nieces make lots of videos. Songs, too. This kind of restriction, once again, is only going to punish the unsuspecting average user.

The chump who's sharing a terabyte of copyright material is going to know how to get around this sort of restriction.

Low Level Formating

Since the drives come preloaded with this software, can it be low level formated to do away with it? Or is it in the chipset?

That has been answered numerous times already in the thread.

People need to learn to read.

said by TKJunkMail See Profile :

...this only applies to their external network drive product and only affects off-network file sharing (through the web).

There will likely not be any such restrictions implemented into internal hard drives or plain USB external drives. It simply would be impossible to implement such restrictions at the hardware level without cooperation from the software layer (operating system).
Nice to see that some actually read the linked article.

And it also only applies to their 1TB product that ships with that software. And up to 5 people can access the prohibited filetypes with the included software by setting them up with a password in the administration section of the software.

And as others point out - you can skip the included software and use something else if you want to share those files to everyone. But then be prepared for a possible RIAA/MPAA lawsuit or loss of your connection from certain ISPs.

my own experience with a My book world 1TB drive

I own a 1TB My Book World edition drive.
I have made the small mod to it that allows it to be used as a full on linux file server. I don't want to be told what I can and can't share with friends, so I disabled the anywhere access software, and set up an FTP server on the unit itself. It works well. My only complaint is the slow processor and lack of memory in the unit, which results in much much slower network transfers. On a 100mbps local network, the best I can transfer at is about 5 megabytes a second! Yet this unit has a gigabit capable interface on it. Why was a gigabit interface installed in this device when it can't even perform at a full 100mbps or about 10 megabytes a second?
Other than this though my book world 2 has worked well. I'm now looking for something that can perform at gige potential with at least 2TB of storage, as I store CD images and other large files on the system.

How bout

just reformatting it and using Windows File Sharing or other 3rd party "easy to share" software?

BTW, those complaining about WD drives, etc, it has been my observation that every few years, some vendor loses QC, sells off, has drives made in china, or bad bridge. I've had Seagate, WD, IBM (now Hitachi), Quantum (now ?), Maxtor (Now seagate), and a few 3rd party cases (LaCie used to be good but now unreliable).

For serious sharing, most hardcore folks would have their own mirrored raids anyway. True sharing would have encryption and RAID 5 or 6.

But nice to see folks that are draconian are getting caught or reported!

CYA Mode response.

This looks like a typical lawyer prompted response. I
use large drives to do video editing. I use Linux so I
really dont give a f*** what software they supply. I dont
use it anyways. WD usually seems to charge a bit more for their drives. I expect this to lower prices as people will stop buying their software castrated drives for winxp/vista/whataver. Idiots!
