Comments on news posted 2007-12-10 12:30:47: Last week a study was well circulated that stated half of Internet users think they're secure -- but actually have little to no protection from viruses, spyware, or hackers. ..

From the dpt of the obvious-

In other words, it blocks all spyware -- but they reserve the right to give spyware a pass if it comes from Verizon or a Verizon partner.

Whoa. Shocked & appalled at this news. Who woulda thunk it.

can you see it now....

wait till the computer help forums start getting flooded with people on Verizon that are infected because of this and when we have to tell them that they have to erase the drive and everything on it and reload windows, oh they'll be so happy losing all the photos, documents, and music I can tell you, they'll just love verizon for causing this.

I feel that Verizon's Virus and Protection is working GREAT on all three of my laptops. I had Norton and Spydoctor before this and had nothing but problems everyday. I was glad with Verizon's VISS took those off my computers..

I do not use the advisor. Have no idea about it nor care to use it..

Spyware

The ISP's seem to want our machines to be pwned. If you call customer service at RR, the first thing they do is insist that you hook up a machine running Windows, directly to the modem, with the firewall shut off. I wonder how many people get things running in this suicidal configuration and then just leave it like that? I monitor my connection, and I see random attacks about 3-5 times/minute. Chances are pretty good that you wouldn't make it out of one of those customer service calls without getting pwned. The few times I've had to do it, I loaded a fresh copy of Windows, did the updates from behind a firewall, did the customer service call, and then wiped the machine.

It is a sytem status scanner

It is nothing but a scanner that detects if you have anti-spyware, anti-virus, and a firewall turned on or not from any vendor. Use or not, it is free and available here:
By the way, it doesn't BLOCK anything. It is just a mediocre system status scanner only.

If you want PROTECTION, you must install a separate software pkg called "Verizon Internet Security Suite".

This is where you PAY for the separate anti-virus software:

Re: can you see it now....

Norton is the most worthless product in the world. It's a resource hog and lets far too many bad things in.

Spyware Doctor is a better product. However, I've never used any of the Verizon suites, due to the fact that they'll let their partners infect your system.

I'm running Vista Ultimate with Spyware Doctor and Defender. Minimal problems as long as I use Firefox. IE is the worst browser to use, IMO. (Too bad I do need to use it once in a while.)

Re: From the dpt of the obvious-

Of course... this is similar to ToS on many wireless services that VZW offered. I know this is not wireless, but the analogy is similar

ToS restricts all streaming, VoIP, video, etc unless its a VCast service (i.e. paid for content by Verizon or a Verizon partner).

If this 'was' security software, then it sort of defeats the purpose of 'security', if it discriminates by '$$$' or having a hole for bypass access.

Re: It is a sytem status scanner

Finally.. something you said that I agree with

Additionally, you cannot place your trust in any one security product, they all (every single one of them, without fail) have different deficiencies, usually its the cat and mouse or whackamole game they play with malicious code writers. There is always a time delay between when a piece of malicious code is released, and when AV/Spyware updates are released. That could range from a few hours, to a few weeks, and lets not even talk about the turn around time on MS patching.

Your best bet is to layer your security, and not rely on one single product vender, but rather multiple venders. An example, a year or so ago, there was a vuln in the way symantec products, ALL of them, every single one of them, processed IP traffic. The end result (although it was patched somewhat quickly), was that a malicious entity could bypass all security measures in place without detection.

Use 1 product for AV, another for firewall, another for spyware etc, and don't just pick the cheapest product, and for god sake.. DO NOT LISTEN TO ANY VENDER TRYING TO PUSH THEIR OWN PRODUCT, they are only interested in their own products, and will push them over others, regardless of how sucky they are (oh, and never touch any AV from Computer Associates, their etrust product is a load of shit). You need to go via third party, non financially attached reviews (consumer reports for example), or trial products. Obviously my mentality comes from being a security eng in a corp/gov environment, but the principal is the same.

I could go on.. but I suspect most have not even read this far

for $60/year you [do not] get

- 3 PC only
- no 64bit
- no Windows 2003

to bad my household has 2 PC's, 1 Media station and 2 laptops all running Vista Ultimate 64. Sucks to be a 'normal' user nowadays.

I'll Take a Trojan XL Condum

but please, poke holes in it before you give it to me.

Why use this "security" since it is full of holes? It is not longer security but a means of reducing your online pleasure. Pop-ups from "trusted" vendors? Yeah right.

Incredible

AVG Free, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender. All free and used in conjunction with a firewall eliminates the need for anything else.

Who actually needs this?

In other words, it blocks all spyware -- but they reserve the right to give spyware a pass if it comes from Verizon or a Verizon partner.

And now tell me - who really needs this? It seems that all the PC users already have a protection that protects them from ALL the threats, not doing this selectively. Personally I have such a configuration that gives no chance to any of the threats to pass:

Firewall: Comodo(www.personalfirewall.comodo.com)

Anti-Spyware: Anti-Keylogger(www.anti-keyloggers.com) as permanent protection and Ad-Aware(www.lavasoftusa.com/) for scanning

Anti-Virus: NOD32(www.eset.com)

That is actually all that I need:)

You have a false sense of security, there is no such thing as a completely secure network, no where, anywhere, even the most secure of the secure networks (yes I have worked on such things) are vulnerable.

Unless you turn the box off and put it into a vault and forget the combination, there will always be a threat and the potential, with AV, you are playing the trailing game, where you await AV updates for KNOWN widespread malicious content (there are still hundreds of virus's and trojans out there in use by the malicious communities that are not public knowledge, or there are no updates for at the moment)

The same goes for anti spyware software. As for firewalls, there are ways to bypass those as well with the use of covert channels.

Yet another free scanner

said by »verizon.securityadvisor.com :

Security Advisor monitors the security status of certain security measures on your CPU. Some security applications may not be recognized by the Security Advisor Service, so you should always make your own independent assessment of the security status of your CPU.
That last bolded statement is the best -

Millions of them out there, this doesn't do any more, and probably less, than many. See »Security »Are there free online virus checkers? for a few free scanners that actually look for malware. The plain ol' Windows security center will provide anti-malware and firewall status for most commonly used products.

For Windows users who want a fairly comprehensive system security analyzer (not a fix/protect application), try MBSA.
Link here.

If it comes from Marketwire, rest assured it's a PR blurb with little useful information. Maybe someday I'll issue a press release for Geezer Industries' amazing new alcoholic beverage quality analyzer.
