Goodbye Earthlink you were only good during your dial-up days.

Corrupt City Government?

Or is Earthlink dying?

From the article:
Three years ago, Street announced that Philadelphia would be the first major U.S. city to have its own network for wireless Internet access , putting the city on the technology map. But the project is nearly a year behind schedule and beset by cost overruns.
Mayor Street is one of the most corrupt big-city mayors in the country. Maybe the payoffs haven't been coming into City Hall fast enough.

 Did They Survive The Trip?

Considering how dangerous the city has become under the outgoing John Street administration, one has to ask if the Earthlink people might have been gunned down on the way to the meeting.

Farewell

The only life this company has if ISPs resell their networks to them, and like stated above nexgen networks won't. And If it wasn't for "Bring Your Own Access" with AOL (Is that what's it's still called?) they'd be on the same boat.

Yep and only the beginning of those days, after they ate mindspring and others they got too big for thier britches and started to suck.

Years ago I was on AOL and switched to Earthlink, it was great ... at first.
They oversubscribed and thier service went downhill, disconnections, busy dial-up numbers, poor service, etc.

I wouldn't bring my laptop into the city anyway.

Having that thing in my hand may slow my draw time, and heaven knows every second counts when going for your gat.

My first dial-up account was with Pipeline. Then I went to AOL, Compuserv, Genie, Netcom and Prodigy.

Don't be silly, it's still cop season in Philly, not executive season. That doesn't start until January.

Strange contract

They have Earthlink building it, a non-profit called Philadelphia Wireless running it, yet Earthlink is able to re-sell bandwidth to businesses for profit?

Its no doubt they will be late finishing it as its a non-traditional type of network topography for a city, in that its a mesh network which is still developing protocols for 3rd generation service.

Something we must not be hearing about all this and thier "confidential agreements" with other providers.

""While we are sensitive to the city's concern about the future of the project, we are not able to provide complete answers because of confidentiality agreements with other providers that may have an interest in this network and our status as a publicly traded company," the company said in an unsigned statement submitted to the Committee on Technology and Information Services."

Looks like they are deliberatly stalling the project so it can become insolvent.

The firm Philadelphia has retained to build a citywide wireless Internet network has spent millions more than its anticipated costs and cannot say when it will complete the project, City Council members were told yesterday.

In fact, EarthLink Inc. representatives didn't show up for a committee hearing on Wireless Philadelphia. The company's retreat from the municipal-wireless business prompted the hearing. But EarthLink made clear by its absence that it did not want to be peppered with questions in public as it rethinks its business strategy. All that money spent for a few thousand people. What a waste!!

EarthLink said it had spent more than $20 million to establish the broadband wireless service, "in excess of the $12 million to $15 million anticipated by the city and EarthLink at the outset of the project."

The network is substantially built, the company said, but neither EarthLink nor city officials could provide a date for when the system would be completed.

Greg Goldman, CEO of the city-created nonprofit Wireless Philadelphia, said EarthLink's network had "several thousand" subscribers so far.
Hardly surprising that a Muni-Wifi project is way over budget and behind schedule. Involve politicians and city government and that is what happens. All that money spent for only a few thousand people. What a waste!!

This is just business as usual for the Philadelphia city government. I'm surprised the mayor's brother isn't secretly "running" things.

Mindspring VOIP

I have Earthlink True Voice Phone Service. Up until yesterday I was able to use the "Mindspring" PC to PC and PC to Phone service to place phone calls. Now, no connection is made to the user on the other phone, but it does ring to their number. I know my mic/headset works. The mindspring.net website just re-routes back to the main earthlink page. Tried to get an answer on the customer service "chat" and was told to call the toll free number, which basically refers back to the main Earthlink support.

can we all agree now that

Muni WiFi is a disaster and a waste of taxpayer money.

This will be a tough thing for Karl and DSLreports to do, but with some courage...you can do it.

Just say it. Repeat after me...

Muni WiFi is a disaster and a waste of taxpayer money.

Not speed

The network is horrible in most places. I sometimes occur speeds above 700ms-2000ms and sub-dial up speeds on their "high-speed" network

Re: Did They Survive The Trip?

Shit, now you guys got me double scared.

I was a boy scout, and now I'm a cop.

Looking both ways, and ducking behind cover.

Remember children. If it won't stop a bullet, it's not cover, it's concealment.

Cover- Engine block, giant rock, brick wall.

Concealment- A bush, wooden fence, a car door.

Knowing the difference is half the battle in the city of..er brotherly love.

Fortunately, I don't work there, I'm in the outer burbs, so usually it's lost dogs and domestics. But sometimes, it kicks off...

BTW, what Philly did to the scouts was reprehensible. Here we've got a city that is beset on all sides by the scum and villanry that is the result of fatherless children, and what do they do? Take a way from an organization that provides boys and young men with solid role models.

Life in these United States folks....
