held hostage by the carriers

Some of Palm's problems are poor management. However ATT and Verizon make Palm bleed red from all the hoops they have to jump through.

Case in point. The Treo 750 WM6 upgrade. This should have been out months ago. However, because of the assholes at ATT Palm had to waste man hours putting stupid shit in the upgrade and taking away things that should be there (like Windows Live Mobile).

I hope this kind of abuse changes when the 700mhz spectrum auction takes place...but it may be too late for Palm.

It doesn't help that they are trying to continue a technology that has been passed up. "Devices" that can do what a Palm can are common now, they no longer have the market. And this tube TV manufacturer is now suffering from everyone else's plasma and LCD products.

Well...

I still like my Treo 600. I was not terribly impressed with the Treo 650, other than the 320x320 display.

Horrible, bulky phones. Why carry it around when a thin blackjack can do all the same things.

As do I. And I also still prefer the image quality of a CRT over LCD. But Palm simply can't expect to maintain the same sales, profits, and employment numbers now that they aren't the ONLY game in town, and now that there are newer technologies (a flip size cell phone that can also do everything a palm can for example)

Duh, 'cause it sucks

I had a Treo700W with Verizon and it's a horrible piece of crap hampered by an even worse mobile OS. Everything from the button layout to the antenna design, it's just not thought out. With so many competitors lowering their prices like i760, Q and BB, I'm surprised Palm sells any of their crap anymore. At the time it was $600 with a contract and even now, they're still running in the $300-$400 range. There are simply competing devices that are far superior for the same or lower price.

Agreed. I see your point.

Palm and RIM in same boat

Palm and RIM have been hanging onto a format from the late 90's and early '00's. There has been little innovation from these two companies and if not for the enterprise support RIM would be in the same boat.

The Palm (and RIM) is about as cool as a scientific calculator. Sure it gets the job done and you may even be required to get one for a task but that's about it.

Glad the market kicked them in the teeth

My Treo 700p was possibly the worst mobile phone I've ever owned. If I had a dollar for every time my 700p locked up or just froze for several seconds, I'd have been a millionaire. When Palm pushed an "update" that claimed to fix the lockup/freeze problems, the update process was so tedious that it took over AN HOUR, didn't fix the original problems, and managed to introduce new problems (apps started crashing).

Utterly worthless, that Treo 700p.

Check Amazon.com reviews of the 700p for more evidence.

True but the difference is RIM has been established as a leader for push email and the majority of business people continue to use their devices.

On the other hand, all Palm has is an ancient OS that hasn't changed in years. I haven't met anyone that still uses the Palm OS.

That's why I said "if not for the enterprise support RIM would be in the same boat." RIM is also resting on its laurels and hasn't innovated. If they continue down the same path, RIM will be Palm 2.0 as some new player gets into the enterprise market. And I don't think push email is the killer app for RIM either. Most IT Managers in the enterprise want security and RIM offers this. A phone that works on `pull' email but offers the same security options as what RIM offers could easily be a disruptor in the field.

PalmOS

That's the biggest problem with Palm, the OS
They sold it to ACCESS and that's it, they're done.
Either Palm will offer a product based on ALP (palmOS 6) or they will die. I'm sick and tired of very limited OS.
Imagine treo with multitasking capability and laptop comparable performance. Now we're talking.

Someone want to buy my 700w? After I year I couldn't stand it any more and got a Blackberry.

What a unreliable POS the 700w is.

700w is (Windows Mobile) is no better. I've never had so many lockups in a device.

Re: Well...

I actually went with the 650 because I can see better in daylight. The 650's screen turns a kind of Monochrome and is very readable in direct sunlight.

Other than that - I didn't see a whole lot for what I do...

because the thin blackjack can't do all of those things. Windows Mobile Standard pales in comparison to Windows Mobile Professional
