| Hmm.
I guess I'd wonder if this has a QAM/ATSC Tuner?
It says it will hook up to your cable and access the anaolog channels, but even a Visio TV will access digital channels over just the coax cable (without a set-top box).
Also, it says OEMs, but it would be cool for end-users to buy these to speed up acceptance.

Not too shabby. I would make one improvement, however. Why not go the extra mile and throw in a QAM tuner that is CableCard compatible for the digital broadcasts? That would be even nicer! |

| Analog Cable and Analog OTA are two different things if I understand this right.
As I understand, if you have cable, you can still use your old tv in the future even if you don't have a cable box, its just Off the Air that is affected.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm not.

But that being said, MOST cable companies are making plans to end analog channel delivery eventually. Some faster than others. -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page |

Did you miss this part?

totally agree,
I can access my RCN digital channels with my Philips HDTV w/o a digital converter box. The channels show up as crazy numbers though, and I have to write down on a piece of paper as to what channels are for what station. I get channels like 143.555 and 143.556. I wonder how I could select channels with an onscreen tv guide when using the slingmodem. |

The Analog cut off date in Feb 2009 applies to NTSC over the air broadcasters. Cable is not required to cut off analog service to its customers, and in fact, I believe there was something brewing in the FCC that is said to require cable to keep analog turned on until 2012, unless they offer a no-cost box to analog subscribers.
But yes, this thing should have a QAM tuner and CableCard, or now Tru2Way capability.
BTW, this device does not have an OTA NTSC tuner, as no one was allowed to manufacture and sell a device with an NTSC tuner after July 2006 in the US, per the FCC. Cable NTSC is slightly different than OTA NTSC, and so TV's and other boxes (TiVo's) are still made with Cable NTSC capable coax inputs. |

That would be even nicer! that would be nice however there is one problem with that as Cablelabs licensed out the cablecard specs for pc based tuners to microsoft because vista had DRM built into it. I believe the slingbox is based of some form of linux basically making no chance in hell we will ever see any cablecard support. -- »www.crucialcolin.com/ | »www.pcgeektech.com |

I foresee Comcast allowing this on our network. Last year, when I was in a different department, I overheard talk of us working with Sling on a device. |

New cable boxes are having cablecard slots and cards required from the FCC I believe. These STB are running on linux. |

Controlling the cable box is easily accomplished with an IR blaster. All you're doing is hooking the STB output to the slingbox instead of the TV. |
