Internet. From SPACE (maximum reverb......)!
Hopefully that'll help some people out who's only options are this or (28.8kbps or less) dialup. |

No matter what the capacity, satellite still is at the bottom of the barrel for a ISP. Been there done that, weather, equipment failure, FAP, all makes satellite, the very last option. With EVDO and other wifi options, Satellite internet will have to change dramatically, to be a option, customers in the future, will use. |

| Is it just me?
Is it just me or have there been too many "We plan to do..." press releases this week? Maybe it's CES but these press releases are starting to sound like they're coming from an alcoholic in denial.
I wonder if I can use that same tactic in real life?
Annual review time at work looking back on the past years accomplishments... "I plan on doubling productivity next year"
At the bank when applying for a mortgage... "I have a plan to earn 2 million dollars a month from home -- Trust me."
On a date... "I have the stamina of a stallion"
Paying bills... "The check is in the mail."
Maybe I'll just believe what I see... "We're slowly rolling out fiber, hurry up and sign up to wait while we tease you with inserts in your monthly phone bill." "Your cable service is like a BMW, so it's a slow Isetta but it's still a BMW." and "Your satellite service is 10x faster than dial-up, even if the lag is about as good as a disconnected 56k modem. What's that? Don't have Satellite but you want it? You'll have to live with that modem just a little longer." |

Wow, 10 times the capacity? Lemme see, it's Ka-Band, not Ku-Band. Translation: Higher frequency means wider pipes to stuff more bits through.
However, it does not mean that you can run your Half-Life 2 server through it. It's parked up in geostationary orbit just like all the other commercial satellites (except Iridium). It's that latency (lag) thing - roughly 1/4 S each direction.
The total pipe size might be 10x, but that doesn't mean each user gets 10x. |

I've always felt satellite broadband is an incredibly niche market. I would never consider it unless it were my absolute last resort. In fact, I'd go DS1 or ethernet before I'd subscribe to satellite.

Don't forget Xohm (WiMax) is on the horizon too... Unfortunately for people like my best friend that lives oin the boonies( actually he lives 4 miles from town ) satellite is the ONLY option for broadband. Wireless phone companies don't want to provide EVDO and the like to people like him just like cable and phone companies have no interest in providing cable or DSL internet.
One can only hope that companies like HughesNet and WildBlue will increase speeds( without increasing already ridiculous prices ) and have higher caps. No excuses now for such low speeds and low caps. |

When you have no other options I think satellite is a very respectable option, even though ping times are twice what they use to be on WildBlue.
