decreased discount amount...

nice...how much money did they give some marketing person to come up with that nicely phrased way of saying you're screwed?

"For your convenience, you can keep your Verizon FIOS Triple Freedom" -- Really?! My goodness, better write home to ma and tell her the good news.

Just so they know, I am a FIOS customer and I am not going anywhere so please stop trying to fool me with the verbage in your contract...it doesnt fool anyone.

Gota love them...

"Verizon going so far as to call it a "decreased discount amount" instead of a price hike:"

Marketers, Gota love them. Who else come comes up with stuff like that ?..

Whether it's 99 or 109.....

or 159 for that matter..I think it's all a good deal.
Whether it's from Verizon and their fios service or Comcast..TW or others..these providers are giving consumers a lot of value for this kind of money IMHO.

TV..phone..and internet..for 3 to 5 bucks a day total.
I don't know about YOU but I blow that on a coffee and muffin at dunkin donuts and compared to many things we all buy each day..I know of little to nothing that gives me the value..convenience..entertainment..enjoyment and whatever else that my Comcast bundle gives me each day.

IMHO..the real people that are missing out are those just going a la carte and buying each product individually.
The real value is in taking the bundles and enjoying everything these providers have to offer.

And so, whomever you choose..as long as they can offer decent service and are truly next generation providers..(LOL @ AT&T)...both Verizon w/ fios and most cable co's have some attractive offers for what amounts to very little money for all we get.

As for at&t..when exactly they'll wake up and smell the bandwidth remains to be seen..but time is running out for them.

Docsis 3.0 and verizon fios is going to finish them off.

Forever.

Isn't this the 4th or 5th rate hike?

And downward trajectory begins. Look for satisfaction numbers to slowly creep down to cable levels. It all about $$$$$$ to customers and after a couple of years of Fios increases the pig will begin to just BE A PIG.

While I do give Verizon kudo's for taking the big jump into fiber to the home..people need to remember how VERY expensive it is for this company to do that.

The cable co's and Comcast have been at the fiber rollout game for over 10 years now..at a cost of over 100 BILLION Dollars.
And that was in yesterdays money terms.

Verizon is going to have to recoup this money somewhere..somehow..and the big risk here is that they may not be able to attract enough people to even begin to make it pay off.

It is VERY hard moving into someone elses well established business..and while they may have some successes..taking the cable customers away from comcast and TW is not going to be easy...at least in large enough numbers to make it work for their amazingly large investment.

I think it all adds up to the real risk that verizon will HAVE to continue to raise prices above the rates the cable providers rates..and the increases will be larger each year that passes.

People forget that it isn't always the latest and greatest that finally rules the day.
Remember Rambus memory? And even Intels undying support for it?

Who won?
DDR did instead.
Because while it might not have been all that rambus was in terms of technology..it was the leader in availability and price. And followed a consistent upgrade path.

I think that describes Comcasts docsis 3.0 plans. Not to mention that Comcast DOES have have a vast fiber network as well. It's just not talked about that much.

Again..not to take anything away from Verizon fios because they are doing what they have to...have bitten a very large bullet in the process..but whether or not they will succeed really remains to be seen.

It is very much an uphill battle for them for sure.

The telcos are now paying a VERY big price for their absolute refusal to upgrade their networks over the last few years. Instead...they were all about paying dividends to their shareholders instead.

They are in a very difficult position..and it's only going to get worse.

Docsis 3.0 is coming. Very soon. This year.
Millions upon millions of customers will have it.

And what we REALLY might wind up witnessing is the death..

of AT&T because of it.

oh plz. Cable companies do not offer fiber connections. Quit spreading their marketing lies. They may have fiber in their system, but it does nothing for the end user.

That is the worst marketing ploy to try to convince people that they can compete with FIOS

Re: Hmmm...

TWC triple play here goes from $89 to $115 after 12 months.

TWC triple play inludes basic digital plus a choice of programming tier, 1 STB, HD locals, 6Mb/512Kb HSI, unlimited voice. 15/2 HSI is $10 more.

It's all the same crap and in my area where FiOS is a bit cheaper with programming (something like $43 vs $46, but they're more expensive with voice, HSI and equipment rentals.

Here just comes down to how many and what kind of boxes you want to rent. Fewer boxes, FiOS is cheaper, more boxes TWC is cheaper.

Where FiOS used to be a smoking deal, now they're just competitive.

play the game

Well, you have to play the game... switch to the competition.. probably Cablevision in metro NY.. When an ONT goes UNUSED that will burn Verizon more than it will the customer who switches..

Re: Hmmm...

FIOS is better than TWC. The thing that puzzles me, that everybody wants telcos to be dumb pipe, but when Vonage/ViaTalk starts using this dumb pipe, you start to hear, that they are not reliable as telcos or cablecos, so they should go away. So then why everybody asks for dumb pipe, but nobody wants to deal with a bit of issues with start-ups. Generally speaking, nothing prevents any start-up to offer IPTV over FIOS much cheaper than Verizon, but nobody will do it, because of example of Vonage/ViaTalk and etc. BTW, I have never seen official standpoint of dslreports on this issue. It seems, they don't like companies like Vonage/ViaTalk, but want telcos to be dumb pipe. It is not possible, it is one way or another.

cablevision

I guess verizon didnt think cablevision would be able to compete. Cablevision is doing a good job competing and is not easily winning over cablevision customers.

I wouldnt doubt if cablevision is the sole reason for this.

Do the math

Verizon 15/15 is $65.00 a month. If your in a area with OTA reception, just pay for the 15/15, and DOWNLOAD all the TV shows you want. Every TV show is usually available within a couple of hours, and it's commercial free. Hell, you can download a TV show in about 4 minutes, and a HD version of the show in under 10 minutes. Setup your mythtv with an RSS feed, and poof, you're done.

Assuming you watch 3 tv shows per night, here's the cost savings you will see in 1 year :

Verizon Triple Play : 150.00/month = 1800.00/year
Verizon Fios (month): 65.00/month
1TB MythTV box : 700.00 (over 1000 hours, or about 1300 TV shows)

Savings in year 1 : $400.00/year
Savings after year 1:$1000.00/year

I don't know about you, but I can think of much better uses for $1000.00 a year than paying it to Verizon.

And you don't need to 'buy' the shows on DVD, you can burn your own HD versions of the same shows. The savings on that alone can add up to thousands a year.

That's a matter of opinion. Personally, I get better service for quite a bit cheaper from TWC.
