1 edit | Comcast Tivo a crippled Tivo
»news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/200801···wereddvr
Unlike stand-alone TiVos, Comcast's version doesn't allow TV watchers to access music and photos on the home PC, watch Web videos or transfer recorded shows to other rooms, PCs or mobile players. Unfortunately, the best things about the real Tivo are not available on the Comcast platform. -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page |

1 edit | Version 1.0 bugs
For the few that may not know, here's a list of Version 1.0 bugs.
(in no particular order):
1. On DCH boxes, Dolby Digital 5.1 output doesn't work using Optical or Coax out. All audio is in Pro-Logic irregardless of Audio setup settings.
2. Guide starts at wrong channel and Info displays wrong info when pressing the Guide or Info buttons within a minute or so of changing the channel.
3. TiVo sounds. After getting an error sound, the error sound is superimposed on the regular TiVo sound. Restarting fixes this. If using Dolby Digital on a DCT box, there are no sounds at all.
4. When filtering guide display to show only HD programs, it takes almost a minute. Until then guide is empty.
5. Occasional On Demand freezes and black screen. Required unplugging box to fix.
6. When you switch tuners during live programming it plays live for a few seconds then skips back about ten seconds and starts again.
7. Some users report issues with a 'green screen' using HDMI. Sometimes going into the menu corrects it, sometimes you need to switch from an HD channel to SD and then back again. Sometimes you need to hit the "Format" button on the front of the DCH boxes.
8. About 4 minutes to "boot up" from cold power cycle.
INCONVENIENCES:
1. Paging up or down in the Guide is SLOW!
2. No 30 second skip.
3. No Day Up or Day Down 24 hour skip in the Guide.
4. Guide doesn't indicate Rerun or New.
5. Some local channels that were included in the Comcast guide are not included in the TiVo guide.
6. TiVo suggestions should only be recorded on the secondary tuner (whichever is not being output at the time). They shouldn't need to be recorded 24 hours a day. Shouldn't interfere with watching a live program ever by popping up the annoying change channel request. IMO, one tuner's worth of recorded suggestions is more than enough.
7. No HD broadcast resolution pass-through. You must still select 1080i OR 720p.
8. Menus are STILL 4:3 SD. No Tivo style animations or HD graphics.
Still I think I would give it a shot. I need something new and fresh. I really want a change from the bland I-Guide. If I would keep the Tivo option, who knows. Hopefully it's like a fine wine. Things get better with age. |

On the bright side, it will infuse TIVO with some cash. On the bad side it may push people away from TIVO that have only experienced TIVO via Comcast. |

What am I missing here? Why would you get one of these instead of a stock series 3 or TiVoHD with cablecards? Does ComCast not support cablecards? Isn't that illegal? Just wonderin. |

No issues. Having a real DVR is worth the loss of On Demand... but I do miss that the space-heater properties of the cable box |

Isn't that illegal? Just wonderin. Probably because people have not seen TIVO. they know what one is, but have never owned one and only seen DVR's via their Cable Operator. If they see that their DVR has TIVO and it is crap, then it may dissuade them from even buying a real TIVO in the future. |

Because they got an 8 yr contract with a guaranteed income stream after DirectTV started pushing their own boxes instead of Tivos. Yeah but almost $22 a month? In a bit over 2 years you'd have broken even and had access to all the spiffy functionality that the ComCast TiVo apparently doesn't provide. It's another DirecTivo situation all over again (where the TiVo functionality was essentially frozen, leaving DirecTv TiVo owners feeling like second class citizens of the TiVoVerse). |

That's just crazy... The Extra Cost of the $2.95 is per cable account, not per DVR STB.
If you have multiple DVR STB in the house, and you order the DVR upgrade to Comcast TiVo, then all DVR STB will be upgraded to TiVo.
You can not have 1DVR STB running TiVo, and the others running Iguide. |

i think it sucks that comcast is charging extra for this. the fact is that their standard DVR software is complete garbage. they shouldnt be offering this as an upgrade to crap, they should be changing their supplier to this better software as the standard |

said by b10010011 :I wonder why Tivo would let them release such a crappy version of their product? This isn't being done by Comcast alone. This is a join effort .. so any bugs are the responsibility of them both. It took two signatures to release this one.. One from Comcast and the other from Tivo. |

If you were in business and you had to buy something for X amount of money, would you simply give it away? .. or would you charge for it?
The iGuide being "crap" is subject to opinion. To be honest, I've had the command buffer issue a time or two, but I don't seem to have the same issues that some others complain about.I still have the same DVRs that I've had since the III series came out. |
