Comments on news posted 2008-01-22 12:02:11: AT&T has finally unveiled their long-awaited new VoIP service, which the company is calling U-Verse Voice. The service, which will ultimately supplant AT&T's CallVantage service, is being launched first in Detroit. ..

 | | So it's really $30 per month for Unlimited Minutes. It says on their website that it's $45 per month, but if you get it with 2 Uverse services (TV and Internet) you get $15 off. Doesn't this make it $30 a month for most people. That's only $5 more than Call Vantage. | |

So let me see if I understand this....
AT&T wants to charge 2X more for this VOIP vs. their current CalllVanatge service, which they are going to shut down.
AT&T has pitched Uverse as an improvement (to whom I wonder)as it will cost them substantially less to run and maintain then their existing copper lines. (AT&T's own words to the investment community to justify the capex).
So charge more money for a service that costs them less to provide.......
If you are optimistic, you can say that they are setting this price artificially high to eventually cut the price for bundle customers
If you are pessimistic, management and shareholders will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Either way, it looks underwhelming to me.

The thing is this IS the bundle discount
As for shareholders laughing all the way to the bank, I dunno. at&t keeps pulling moves like this and their customers are going to be jumping ship...

| Useless I don't know about other cities/neighborhoods but all of at&t's touting of U-Verse is just empty words in places like Sacramento County with, last time I counted, had less than 6 COs to service the million+ inhabitants of our fair land. The few hundred (charitably few thousands) of people out of a million or 2 inhabitants of Sac County who can get U-Verse speeds using our current at&t setup is lame. Years ago, SBC promised us neighborhood RTs under their "Project Lightspeed" scheme. Never happened. Instead of touting products they can't deliver on, I really wish they'd tout some plan to get fiber close to our doors to serve more customers. | |

| AT&T Unveils New VoIP Service I'm still waiting for a infrastructure that allows for VOIP that can be used while using your PC for uploads/downloads. As I see it, 39.95 or free, if VOIP is garbled clipped and/or otherwise sounds like crap then its a waste of money. For those out there that have the ability to use their VOIP line AND upload/download a decent stream of data this is a relevent thread/discussion and I'm green with envy. I was contemplating AT&T bundling(not by choice but by necessity) but went into a store to look at their line of phones and all I saw was a wall of crap that they're trying to pawn off as 300.00 phones. I'm personally interested in a phone that works when I need it doesn't drop my call or sound like the call is coming from a tin can on a string and not for a media center that takes pictures plays music connects to the Internet and doubles as a sex toy. AT&T is marketing to the crowd that thinks "I gotta have it all" who have more money than common sense. They (AT&T) are evasive about their products when you ask questions and will not commit to anything in writing. Their web-sites are convoluted and lacking any real information. Caveat Emptor is the watchword for AT&T | |
