Field Test of the new Content Protection system

Probably just testing their new prototype filters and capping system, and it had an "Ooopsie."

Maybe part of the email had incriminating evidence that would make charter look bad in some legal case.... so they decided to "lose" the database....

Charter's Response

Apparently Charter did listen; I was part of the account deletion/recreation (my account was recreated from scratch), but I wasn't affected beyond a couple of messages since I use POP3 to Eudora. They just sent me a new message saying they're applying a $50 credit to everyone affected and a free month of their Wi-Fi networking service (eh to that last one). About as much as they could offer I think, though the loss of data for others really hurts.

Hard to choose what kind of email to use

The online stuff is free and convenient, but you never know when something like this will happen and there's no guarantees.

On the other hand, if you download your email to your system and it is deleted from the mail server, you are SOL if you have a similar failure, only on your own system.

I guess having it online to me is more beneficial, but in the end you want a copy of important stuff in both places.

CHARTER'S INADEQUECIES

IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND HOW A COMPANY OF THIS SIZE AND WITH AN ESTABLISHED STRUCTURE AND PROCESS IN PLACE-CAN MAKE A DECISON ON DATA BEING LOST FOREVER IN 24 HOURS OF THE EVENT. HOW HARD COULD THEY HAVE TRIED. EVERYTHING IS RETREIVABLEE-JUST DEPENDS ON HOW HARD AND HOW MUCH $$ YOU WILL SPEND ON RECOVERY.
I AM WRITING TO THE AG'S OFFICE IN MASSACHUSETTS -HOME STATE. I WOULD ENCOURAGE OTHERS SO DO THE SAME. i LOST MUCH MORE THAN A FEW SOCIAL ADDRESSES. WE LOST TENANT INFO AND KEY EMAIL CORRESPONDENCES IN A LEGAL BATTLE. THEY WILL PAY. HAVE HATED CHARTER AND THEIR POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR A LONG TIME. MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS WILL END IN VERIZON.NET.

Re: CHARTER'S INADEQUECIES

Hmmm... upon reviewing your Charter installation paperwork, was there a legality that stated Charter was responsible for what you store in your email? I don't think so. People need to just simply write things down instead of relying on others to do it for them....move on if you don't like it...we don't need your business that badly!

in all the posts in this thread written by you i'd swear you are "Jimmy" the Broadband Specialist II for Charter Communications, the dude that told me that charter was only responsible to make sure that i had email and surfing and after that their job was done .(Gee what if you use your internet for school)
and as for the quote above .....Charter spends millions trying to get customers. i get glossy flyers in the mail all the time. You as an employee with that attitude as above and other posts of yours i've seen, resent the customer and their issues. bottom line if all took your advice ...who fills the bank account that your paycheck comes from.
if you have such a distate for the customer why do you work there???

Re: CHARTER'S INADEQUECIES

I am afraid you are not correct in your assumption of either my name or gender for that matter. He was right! That is our job. As far as using the internet for school, I do as well and if that situation were to occur with my personal emails, I would not be effected because I am smart enough to back up all of my data. They are called flash drives and are not that expensive! And if you think I have a general resent for customers, then you are mistaken again! I do have any aggression towards customers who just want help...only customers like you who feel the need to slander a company who is only providing you with what you were promised. If you want more out of your service, then you should consider a business account where there is more promised to you not cheaping out and getting a residential account to save a few bucks. After all, you get what you pay for. As for my paycheck, that is something I have no worries over. There are plenty more where you came from.

Over 14,000 Customers? Who knew?

I can't believe that Charter actually has over 14,000 customers. Those people must not have any other choice for broadband.

charter is crap

one more example of charter's incompetence and horrible customer service. as soon as Verizon FiOS is available in my city i will be happily switching services.

ISP e-Mail

Why is it that people are so dependant using their ISP's e-mail offerings. I've used Yahoo's FREE web based e-mail for 5+ years with no problems.
Is it because you want to use Outlook/Thunderbird?
Whatever.
Your loss, Charter e-mail users(and I used to have Charter as my ISP-currently with ATT). Get a separate e-mail account-I don't use ATT's Yahoo e-mail for that reason. As I might choose to get another ISP down the road. Since 2002, I've had 3 different ISP provoders, but the SAME Yahoo e-mail address.
Even the free offerings from yahoo or g-mail have better backups.

Unfortunate One!!!

I would just like to vent, since Charter is just blowing me and 14000 or more users off. I use Web mail because I got tired of backing up my email data and converting it every time I redo my OS to another version of Linux or Windows which is quite often. So several years ago I went to pure Web mail because as a computer engineer of over 20 years, I new that they backed up their servers, RIGHT!!! So I complained loudly, to several corporates types with Charter they informed me that they do not backup residential customers data!!! No ifs, ands, or buts about it, they do not do it. So I asked them if they would send me that in writing and they said they could not do that because they were not a lawyer. I said if it is true that you do not backup residential customers data why do you need to be a lawyer to stand by your word. All I got was the same reply. I said do I need a lawyer to find out if you really do not backup residential customers data and she said if you feel you need a lawyer, then you should get a lawyer. So I am getting a lawyer and I suggest any one in the same situation do the same. It's a sad day went a IT company cannot man up to a mistake and just make it right. I would love to get responses back via email but, guess what my account is still meshed up!

Re: Unfortunate One!!!

Wow!! It just goes to show that people do not read their installation paperwork. Had you have done so, you would have read, IN WRITING, that nothing is guaranteed on a residential account. That would be with any ISP you choose. Quit whining and use G-Mail or sign a contract for a business account.

fishy

How could 14,000 email boxes be on one server? I'm thinking whatever happened happened to multiple servers.

Sounds fishy.

Re: fishy

Wanna know the truth? It wasn't a matter of a server crashing, or any maintenance. It was a crappy program that helps to maintain email accounts and email address properties. If you have an email address attached to your Charter account and it somehow gets, shall we say 'lost', your screwed. This kind of thing happens daily. I worked at a Charter call center for 2 years. Every day I would see this type of thing at least once or twice. The only reason anybody noticed this time is because it happened on a much larger scale. And gryphon is right... there is NO GUARANTEE that any of your residential services will work. Ever! My advice to all those who are able, switch providers and try to slowly kill Charter.

No loss unless you don't set up email properly

No one lost anything if they use a decent email client like OE or Thunderbird or SeaMonkey. The only mail would that have been lost would have been any that came in since the user last checked and had downloaded to their computer. If you have your email client sent to check email every 15 minutes in the background then it is highly unlikely that any mail would have been lost. I don't see why everyone is complaining. Don't you guys know how to set up email? Don't you leave your computers on 24/7? I would not have lost any mail.

Charter What a Joke

I guess their stock will go down to maybe $1.00 a share! Oh i guess it's already there. I'd rather spend a buck on 4 McNuggets!

Charter loses email - - it is raining lawyers

Let's see, take a $50 credit for losing all my email or sue for $100,000? Alex, I will take sue for $100,000. I wonder who will start the first class action lawsuit?

Lost email

I called Charter on Monday when this happened, I was told my email was there and would be retrieved within 48 hours..LOL what a joke! I called back and by then I had 4 different stories about what happened....eventually I got to the bottome of it and was told my email was lost and there was no way to retrieve it. lesson learned.
