exactly what other choice is there for people that live out of range of cable and DSL?

Re: satellite

I'd use a library or internet cafe if there was one around. I am rural and need the broadband if I want to stay in touch (which I do). So, yes, I'd sure like to know what the other options might be for those of us in the boonies.
Thanks.

Many around here use wireless internet, like DTN Speednet.
While it sure ain't DSL or cable, it's certainly better than any satellite internet service.

Re: satellite

When I was in the boonies I went with dual dialup modems. I got tired to paying the sat company for nothing.

HughesNet Sucks.

1xRTT cellular is better than Hughesnet. I'm not joking.

There is nothing like that in my area. So people like my best friend that lives a mere 3 miles from city limits is stuck with dial-up or satelite. I guess the governemnt wants people like my friend to move out of the "boonies" and move to town since they don't seem to care.

Re: satellite

Obviously I know zip about this stuff other than I am presently relying on Hughes for connection from the boonies.
Dial Up modems I need phone lines, right? We don't have phone lines or cell service where I am. So I still need the dish (I think)...

The real problem is...

The scary thing about satellite internet is that, because it essentially provides coverage to 100% of the country, it allows the whole ISP industry and its pet trade groups to proudly proclaim that there is 100% broadband coverage everywhere, and therefore no regulation or pressure needs to be brought upon the incumbent providers. They can go on redlining to their heart's content, while the government looks the other way. The actual speed and quality the 100% service matters not at all.

I can't believe

How can people pay that kind of money for their Fap's, Bad customer service etc. If i had to choose i would go for dial-up anytime.Overall it would be as fast but a lot cheaper and not the hassle.

Re: Stick with dialup!

And what about using Sprint Mobile or even Verizon?? Just pop the card in your desktop and away you go! Have you looked to see if you can get it there?

Never worked for us either

Most of our work sites are in remote to semi remote locations. We needed HSI and use Sat HSI for years. Under performed from day 1.

Luckly DSL, WISP's, and Cable are more widely available to us now. But some of our locations still need to use Sat. HSI.

Painfully mediocre describes them to a tee.

Re: satellite

Even dialup is not always an option. Where I live, about 36000 feet from the phone company's central office, a dialup connection runs at about 4800 baud if I'm lucky, and disconnects every 10 minutes or so. Cellular wireless is no-go due to line-of-sight being blocked by nearby hills. So, satellite is truly the only option. They are truly a monopoly, and they know it and behave as one.

Don't forget the latency

Above all else, you have to take the fact that there is considerable latency when using this service. The time it takes for the signal to reach back and forth adds a large amount of latency so browsing the net will seem like dialup anyways.

No options

No other options here in the sticks. If dial-up was available I'd take it just to save money. Hughes has been fine for me for 5 years. Of course I'm not a gamer or a big time downloader.

Glad I'm gone

Happiest day was when I dumped their service when DSL became available for me. Their service is a joke.
