Comments on news posted 2008-02-05 10:03:37: As we mentioned last week, AT&T has decided to raise the price of several of their DSL tiers by $5. The company's Basic (768kbps) tier is increasing from $14.95 to $19.95, their Express (1.5Mbps) tier is increasing from $19. ..

More Money for Old Services

Shouldn't we really be talking about how AT&T continues to raise prices for old technologies (including caller ID and call waiting). Connection speeds are not increasing yet the company arbitrarily raises DSL prices simply because no one is going to stop them. Certainly not an FCC, which at every turn bends over backwards to please the telco (approving AT&T's purchase of Aloha's 700 MHz spectrum in record time).

It would be one thing if AT&T was attaching new services to their DSL and then raising prices, but they're not. Raising prices on old, obsolete products is a precise example of a monopoly run amok - and the FCC seems to condone it.

Re: More Money for Old Services

Where do you get that connection costs aren't rising? Also, have you ever put into consideration that operational costs are rising as well? Gas, vehicles, paying employees are just a few of the things that ATT (and other telco and cable companies) deal with.
