Verizon (aside from Verizon Wireless) is quickly becoming the "warm and fuzzy" company all the geeks love.
Fast, cheap bandwidth, and a hands-off policy.
If Verizon can do it and please investors, why can't AT&T? |

| Verizon is saying this now....
....but what about the future?
They are free to change their mind and if they do, we will see the same rhetoric thrown at them that has been thrown at Cox, Comcast, and ATT.
So far, I have to applaud Verizon because they are correct. It becomes a very slippery slope when it comes to content. What may be legal and acceptable to one person is not to another (pornography being the big one.) |

government should make then split the biz
it's a better cure then net neutrality they won't care if your visiting itunes or netflix to download movies or music and not have to worry OH MY god they stealing our business "slow down there access to netflix to make them order our VOD channels"
TV and Internet don't mix
especially if tv side where content providers wants u to sensor your other services (internet) or cap becaue pirated shows on the net.
they should be pipe provider and that's that.
you want to be a cable tv service so be it but not both.
this turning in to 1-3 companies controls all |

Verizon has done nothing but impress me from day one, in direct contrast to its many detractors out here. This announced stance toward content filtering does nothing but elevate my opinion of them. They understand what they are, what they should be doing, and what they shouldn't be doing. |

| Unworkable even for Copyrighted stuff
Even putting aside the slippery slope of what you would need to block, AT&T can't possibly block *all* copyrighted material. It just can't be done.
First of all, pretty much everything that traverses the Internet is copyrighted. Most of it is permitted to be transferred, though. Web pages, for example. But there are a lot of things out there that might not be allowed. What if the web page contains a substantial amount of text from a copyrighted book (more than fair use allows)?
By their reasoning, AT&T should block that also. But how will they know that the text 1) comes from a copyrighted book, 2) Isn't being posted with permission from the copyright author, and 3) Isn't covered by fair use?
The short answer is: They can't. They can't possibly tell in a foolproof manner via an automated system what is permitted copyrighted content being transferred and what isn't. Holes will exist and false positives will occur.
Holes will be both exploited by those who like to transfer copyrighted material without permission from the copyright owners and will also be used as fodder for lawsuits against AT&T. ("They put blocking software in place but didn't block transfer of my work! They are parties to copyright violation and need to pay me big bucks!")
The false positives might range from mildly annoying (if they build a system to quickly remove them) to extremely frustrating (if they leave false positives in place and don't remove them promptly).
Verizon is being smart. They see the morass that AT&T is wandering into and are refusing to follow. -- -Jason Levine Support a children's charity. Buy a calendar. Shooting For A Cause Jason's Toolbox | PCQandA.com |

First, we gave them the right to demand ID to get on the plane, even if we have a ticket. Then we gave them the right to search us, although we went through the metal detector. Then we gave them the right to take our lands in the interest of 'commerce' Then we gave them the right to make a national ID card. Then we gave them the right to monitor our internet, our phone calls, our medical records. Then.. we had no more rights, and we had become that which we had fought so long and hard against. Probably something far more mundane, such as the **AA's promising The Deathstar very favorable rates and conditions for UVerse.
But yeah, there is a wide swath of people out there who want control of the Internet, especially in the entertainment industry. Remember: patrons of all sectors of the entertainment industry, radio, TV, movies and music, are down. Part of that is because of the fact that people are using the internet. They want them eyeballs and earholes back, and the way to do it is to essentially grab it, by any means, fair or foul. If it means lying, cheating, stealing and barratry to get it, well...so what? |

Bring down the corporations man! Lets go to the hippy jam festival and do something about it!
I work for a pretty big company and I get better benefits than I ever would from any other local company (been there, done that). I get a fair wage and it supports my family. Our company is global and participates in charitable programs around the world. This is true for most large corporations BTW, and please don't say it's a "front".
Sorry, but to say that the corporations are the bad guys you're smoking dope. Large government and socialist control is the problem. This is why our states should have more say so with day to day social issues and the fed ensure our rights and protection. It's people that want larger government control and overreaching social programs that make it worse. -- »www.fairtax.org |
