The AT&T Wireless billing ship has run aground. Maybe the entire fleet. They keep refunding me an $8.95 credit and then send me a "bill" for a long-canceled account with it still there.
That they have no clue of the ETF does not surprise me one bit. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

I jumped ship last year from AT&T (then Cingular) and on T-Mobile. in my area AT&T has very poor service and now all these billing snafus and changing fees are making me a very happy T-Mobile customer.
Not to say T-Mobile is perfect. But for me, the billing is done right, the prices are reasonable, and I can actually make phone calls in my own home. |

I'm not disputing the problem, just the testing/results. 12 calls? To a company with thousands of reps? Thats like asking 12 people in TExas who they'd vote for, and then concluding the winner would win the next election.

| better than before
Well when i last had cingular a number of years back it was quite bad customer service wise. But when I just re-upped and got new phones and such, they were a million times better than previous (and billing was even correct)
But the question of ETF is easy, and they shouldn't get it wrong, though of course you could just read your TOS... |

This isn't surprising for a company that currently has a massive turn over in the Customer service department, pays their employees peanuts and treats them like shiat. Not to mention they hire anybody who will walk in the door.
You want to avoid ETF? Buy a phone at full retail price or off ebay or a friend and start service with zero month contract. Then you can leave whenever the hell you want. -- It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything- Tyler Durden |

Re: Not surprising..
Several years ago, I had a family share plan with Sprint. I bought a used Sprint Cell Phone through eBay and when I called Sprint to have it activated and added to my pre-existing shared plan, they attempted to sign me into a contract. The only option offered was to accept a month-to-month contract which was an additional $20 above the cost of the plan plus the standard $9.99 for each additional phone on a shared plan.
Again recently, I went into a Sprint store and paid full price with tax around $596 for a new mobile device with the intent to signup for new service, with a new account without contract. The sales representative in the store referred me to Customer Service in the back, I guess they only get a commission for new or extending existing contracts. customer Service happily offered sign me up for an additional $20 more per month which is there fee for a new month-to-month service contract plus activation. So, the $39.99 plan I wanted would have become $59.99 + tax and charges per month + activation. So, I simply swapped the service on my existing account from the my old phone to the new one. Funny, unless I was willing to sign a contract, the customer service in the back of the store wanted to charge a activation fee to simply swap the phone, so I had to go home and call and wait on hold with Sprint to swap the service without a fee.
So, paying full price for a phone does not appear to guarantee new account activation without contract. |

With the dealing with att wireless (no to be confused by the former att wireless which wasn't that bad) they "have no clue" (to quote cramer). there is too much confusion between mergers and acquisitions they are flying by the seat of their pants. Wallstreet is praising them but the company runs soo inefficiently. -- 3 free for you/3 free for me: Free Stock Trades : PM Me |

i actually had problems with TM. I had their new FlexPay service- you get a monthly Myfav5 plan just like a contract plan but pay monthly without the hassle of a contract. they ended up taking most of mycircle minutes out of my anytime minutes. i left them for alltel and never had a problem. |

A lot of it, is a product of who works in these call centers now. I have seen jobs for AT&T wireless in some of the local job posting ads. Those jobs started off at $8.00 or $9.00 an hour. Anyone that has worked in a call center before, knows it is not the most motivational of jobs. Even less so when being paid that little. The turnover rates are extremely high, especially if the call center does not belong to AT&T wireless, but is subcontracted out. The truth is, this is a common occurrence with a lot of call centers regardless of industry. After taking so many calls, and hearing so many people complain, a lot of people there spend their time looking for better job. So keeping up to date with the latest information is not high on their priority list.
A lot of those people are youngsters who are probably in their first customer service jobs, and most likely don't have a high-level of education or experience. |

| Just wondering how correct that is? I visited the ATT site and checked their plans without selecting any sort of mobile device and it appears to indicate the contract and activation fee for ANY NEW line activation.

| I've spoken to 3 customer service reps and one supervisor in the past 2 days and all of them told me that even if I bring my own phone, I'd be required to accept a 2 year contract. I was pretty persistent too.
I'm not saying any of them were right, but at least they were consistent. |
