4 edits | Anti-piracy not in Senate version of Bill
The Ars Technica story doesn't mention it, but a different version of the bill was passed in the Senate without the anti-piracy provisions: »www.news.com/8301-10784_3-986714···nefd.top
Also, the White House has opposed the bill and is threatening to veto it: »media-newswire.com/release_1060551.html But not over the anti-piracy provisions.
The bill has to be reconciled with the Senate version in a conference committee. So, with the White House opposition and the Senate's different version, the anti-piracy provision is far from being approved.
Bill info here: »thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z···r.04137:
Here is how the House members voted: »clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll040.xml |

4 edits | More abuse of Taxpayers
Joe Taxpayer shouldn't be funding student internet services at all. If there is taxpayer funding it should be restricted to the lab and for specific classroom assignments only. Let students pay their own way, then the school can do whatever they want network wise. But if they're taking some of this new funding and using it to support technology infrastructure, the taxpayers through their representatives have a right to attach any strings they feel like attaching.
If the schools don't like it, don't take the money. Taxpayers aren't an ATM to be throttled every time some jerkoff wants more free stuff. |

Has DSLR finally acknowledged that the sharing of copyrighted works is ILLEGAL?
"or to keep illegal file-sharing records that assist corporate interests."
Seems so.
Bottom line is that the colleges provide a service to their students and can be held accountable for the traffic that goes across their network to the internet. Students usually sign (physically or digitally) a code of conduct for internet access and can be help accountable for breaking the rules.
Colleges should be held accountable if they are not keeping copyrighted content from being distributed via their network. -- If the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, what is the road to Heaven paved with?

Neither party is truly interested in "we the people". Only their own special interests. Personally I prefer the term Republicrats or Democans to refer to the critters we have stashed in Congress. It is definitely more descriptive.
In terms of this bill, the Republicans support it because it helps their big business interests and involves their favorite pass-time, surveillance. For the Democrats, it supports their Hollywood buddies. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. |

There are many things that I don't want my tax dollars to go towards.
Welfare abuse, tax refunds for people that never paid taxes to begin with, universal healthcare for Congressional members, pensions for Congressional members, etc...
There are bigger fish to fry than this. |

instead why dont they find our education system better so that more of our people can have higher education rather then waste money on protecting IP that is so terrible 90% of the time they should be happy people even want to copy it. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

said by n2jtx :In terms of this bill, the Republicans support it because it helps their big business interests and involves their favorite pass-time, surveillance. For the Democrats, it supports their Hollywood buddies. The piracy provision was a very small part of a HUGE education grant renewal bill. Most of the votes didn't hinge on this one provision. So, support for the bill had hardly anything to do with this provision. You are looking at it from a very narrow focus. The House of Reps aren't.
P.S.> Here is the one section that deals with piracy:
SEC. 494. CAMPUS-BASED DIGITAL THEFT PREVENTION.
`(a) In General- Each eligible institution participating in any program under this title shall to the extent practicable--
`(1) make publicly available to their students and employees, the policies and procedures related to the illegal downloading and distribution of copyrighted materials required to be disclosed under section 485(a)(1)(P); and
`(2) develop a plan for offering alternatives to illegal downloading or peer-to-peer distribution of intellectual property as well as a plan to explore technology-based deterrents to prevent such illegal activity.
`(b) Grants-
`(1) PROGRAM AUTHORITY- The Secretary may make grants to institutions of higher education, or consortia of such institutions, and enter into contracts with such institutions, consortia, and other organizations, to develop, implement, operate, improve, and disseminate programs of prevention, education, and cost-effective technological solutions, to reduce and eliminate the illegal downloading and distribution of intellectual property. Such grants or contracts may also be used for the support of a higher education centers that will provide training, technical assistance, evaluation, dissemination, and associated services and assistance to the higher education community as determined by the Secretary and institutions of higher education.
`(2) AWARDS- Grants and contracts shall be awarded under paragraph (1) on a competitive basis.
`(3) APPLICATIONS- An institution of higher education or a consortium of such institutions that desires to receive a grant or contract under paragraph (1) shall submit an application to the Secretary at such time, in such manner, and containing or accompanied by such information as the Secretary may reasonably require by regulation.
`(4) AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS- There are authorized to be appropriated to carry out this subsection such sums as may be necessary for fiscal year 2009 and for each of the 4 succeeding fiscal years.'. The White House is threatening to veto this over many of the other provisions. And the Senate doesn't have a piracy provision in their version. It is very possible the piracy provision will die in conference committee before going to the White House for signature.
P.S.> Sometimes I despair of the level of ignorance of our legislative system by the typical US voter. I sometimes think voters should have to take a test before they are allowed to vote. Maybe then we would have better legislators.

No one is saying that it cannot be stopped, but it can be deterred.
There are those in every society that break the law, be it speeding, rape, murder, theft, tax fraud, etc... So since we cannot stop all of it, we should not attempt to deter any of it...PLEASE!
Please show me the word "education" in the constitution. |
