Wichita, KS | They also mis-spelled "Embarq" on the 5th "Related Search" from the top. I've seen that spelling used before for Embarq so perhaps it's a new marketing ploy...  |

OpenDNS adds a few ms response time.
We should be able to use the ISP's DNS server. Not some servers that we are not technically supposed to use (4.2.*) or sign up for stuff like opendns.

You don't have to sign up for opendns, just put in 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 and off you go.
I still use my ISP's DNS servers as its 8ms to them or 60ms to opendns or 4.2.2.x and i see no difference between them and my ISP DNS servers. |

Here are a few more DNS servers that I believe to be good and clean DNS servers. Note these latency wise are favorable to users in California, but I think anyone can use them. Other clean DNS servers welcome.
SpeakEasy Los Angeles DNS: 64.81.45.2
University of California Riverside DNS1: 138.23.146.213
University of California Riverside DNS2: 138.23.226.101
Also, I'm not totally sure but I believe at present anyway Cox San Diego has clean DNS at 68.6.16.30 and 68.6.16.25. Hope that helps. |

I think 4.2.2.* is technically Verizon's DNS (although IP lookup says it's Level3)
...anyway, they are wide-open, and several other ISPs don't seem to think twice about telling their customers to use them when their own DNS is messed up. |

Thanks for some site wide attention to our plight over at the Embarq forum.
I for one hope they put up some clean servers soon. Even one clean server would go a long way in helping silence those of us who object to the whole dns redirection.

They are anycasted, so when you use an 4.2.2.x address, you will be routed to the nearest server. |

If I run a services that at times requires a server side DNS lookup based on a client request, and it answers positive for a failed query, surely, you can see how this could break the functionality of some of the services I run.
However, the issue has been fixed by embarq. |

While the public 4.2.2.x are good, I like use my own personal ad/malware blocking DNS servers.
Feel free to use them, they are open to the public:
74.95.62.68
71.249.184.157
207.59.120.156
If you come across an ad that isn't blocked, let me know and I'll ad it in.
(Of course you'll see an ad from me, but at least it's always the same)
