If McCain wins, he could keep Martin in place until 2011, Even if a Dem wins the presidency, Martin can remain on the commission until 2011 if he so wishes. Though he will probably be leaving sometime in 2009 to run for office no matter who wins. The only thing a Dem president can do is replace Martin as Chairman, NOT knock him off the commission.

The Democrats are mostly anti-Telco because they see them as cooperating with the Republican war effort. Democrats are currently trying to punish Telcos by stripping the immunity clause out of the security law renewal. So I would think that a Democratic administration would be welcomed by Cable because "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".
Also, network neutrality is a much smaller bullet for them to bite then full blown regulatory hell (a la carte channels, price regulation, antitrust, etc. etc.). Maybe the Dems would spare them the latter if they roll over on the former. |

This "free market" crap only works when there's a "free market" how many cable companies compete in your town? ONE and that's all there is ever going to be. If you had 4 or 5 then fine "free market" rules the day. |

Martin would be effectively neutered Depending on whether any deals are cut to change this, it can be 3-2 Republican on the FCC throughout most of 2009, but with a DEM chairman. Bush could reappoint Republican Tate without a Senate OK by making the appointment during the recess between sessions of Congress at the end of the year.

Ah, no. The Telecom Act of 1996 was passed by the Democrats, Clinton and Gore and implemented by Democratic Chairs Reed Hundt and William Kennard. The dems were procompetition, supporting just about any way for competition to form. The Telecom Act provided for UNEs and CLECS, and long distance competition, and mobile phone competition. At the end of the term, there were independent 7000 ISPs, 1000s of CLECs, long distance competition, and more.
And then Republican Powell came in. And while Powell had a policy, Martian followed and the only policy he had was "how much did you give to the bush / cheney campaign." And they got rid of UNEs. And they got rid of ISPs. And they got rid of CLECs. And they permitted merger after merger. And what is now the biggest company? ATT (aka SBC from Pres Bush's hometown of Austin).
The dems were pro telecom in that they were pro competition and under their administration telecom grew like wild fire. The Bush /Cheney loyalists are pro campaign contributors and have no real telecom policy other then, "who is on our side." |

Let ME be the first to let you know why there is only one cable company in one area. The amount of money it takes to over build an entire city is outrageous. Most companies by out each other and just use the same old junk the last company had so that they keep the profits they earn from charging way to much for terrible service. An industry that is slowly being dominated by Verizon and AT&T with their fiber network. Tell the cable company you've had enough with the terrible product and switch. The results will shock you. |
