it's utopia.....

nice to see an attempt there. I'd love to see how they plan on segmenting this network between city services, businesses, and the public.

and does this mean the RIAA will be able to sue the city and the businesses for stolen music over the network?

More Typical Misplaced Government Priorities

While the linked article claims that the first $500k of funding will come from private sources, we have seen numerous examples of failed municipal wireless systems, including many "public-private partnerships" which ended up burdening taxpayers with yet another expensive, unneeded boondoggle. It is perfectly reasonable to presume that this system will end up on the long list of municipal wireless failures.

The school district serving Perth Amboy is classified as an "Abbott District." This means that additional state funding must be pumped into this system. Perhaps any government funding that would be wasted on this project would be better used to funding the school system.

Since you obviously don't know much about the town itself, you wouldn't know that they've already done a tremendous amount of updating in the school system, including replacing the schools themselves. The system languished for years.

Perth Amboy has always been, for the most part, a lower middle-class, immigrant town - with one nationality succeeding the other in waves as the decades have passed. It was always a heavily industrial town - one that most of you in suburbia or less populated regions would look down on - but in the past few decades it has lost its heavy industry to globalization and its better-class retail businesses to the area malls. It is a town with an excellent waterfront location that is trying to reinvent itself and keep itself vibrant, instead of sliding into decay and oblivion. They are doing what they can, with whatever private and public money they can get their hands on, to improve the town in a myriad of ways - most of them for the better, IMO.

More power to them if they can actually create that wireless canopy. I wish the town I currently live in took that kind of initiative.

Here we go again....

<sarcasm>Everyone should know by now that only phone company employees have the technical expertise to operate a network. The mere mortals in Perth Amboy don't stand a chance. They are fools for even trying this futile experiment.</sarcasm>

If the city's government fails (which is by no means imminent or even likely), the state will have to bail it out... and then the state will go running to the feds for more money, pointing to the cost of the bailout for another reason... We're all connected.

Hmmm

Since I live in the town over would I be able to use their network or is it restricted to people that live up to the border between towns?

You don't live there either. Why do you care if I care?

Bravo for them. Don't pay too much attention to ol hates-the-government-so-bad-it-is-painful-to-read. Unless the "freemarket" somehow saved the day here, he's not for it, no matter how positive the results.

Diff Tech

From what is said in the article they will be using microwave tech here. Not standard radio wifi ( no ABG or N). I'm in North Jersey, wish them well and hope it takes off across the state. I can dream.

Oh please, I'm not going to reference your hundreds of posts railing against the gov't being involved in any shape or form with broadband deployment. And your freemarketeering is well known here, so stop with the Alfred E. Neuman routine already.
