WHY?! If said people in rural area (like me) wanted satellite, we would get it. If we wanted to stick with our lousy dialup because it performs better than satellite for 99% of stuff except like download speed (like me) that's why we are using dialup and not satellite. It's not like there's a shortage of satellite service...
More Wimax, less satellite.
Satellite isn't even high-speed internet, IMO. It should be called "Desperation Internet".
Also: 6 million people? That's like only 2% of the population of the US. If 80% are living in urban areas (and thus probably have some form of faster than dialup connection), that still leaves the 18% in the rest of the rural areas unserved. |

2 edits | From what I've heard, there are still people on the waiting list for Wild Blue and Hughes? satellite for years. The people that do have it complain about slow speeds and congestion during peak hours.
The article states that they will also deploy in areas that have access to broadband ... Cue the corporate shills loudly proclaiming it's a waste of money. WiMax ate my baybeee!

The loan to Open Range is expected to foster business development and create new jobs in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Wisconsin. I'll bet powerful House & Senate politicians had a hand in who gets the money.

Ok what do they call rural, a town of 45,000+ or a town of 200+? That is what makes me mad, all these companies doing wireless in cities that already has DSL & Cable!!! Wow thanks guys they allready have broadband!!! |

Apparently a town of 50,000 is rural *LOL* because our town would be covered under this according to the plan... and we already have 4 broadband providers in the populated areas... but a ton of farm land around it |

and $267 million loan to give WiMax and satellite broadband to only 6 million people would equate to $44.5 million per person. For $44 million I'll drag an ethernet from my house to anywhere in the US. |

Where is the listing of the areas they plan to serve, out in the sticks here I onny have dial up or satellite. Be interested in seeing what kind of areas they are going to serve, ones with duplication already in broadband service or truly ones without current service. |

You may want to visit an Amish community. You would be surprised how many have solar panels. The furniture makers have electricity and phones in their shops. |
