I live in Georgia and was thankfully not affected. In fact, our speeds were about 10 Mbps faster than they normally are. |

| Something was fishy...
Large sites like Google, Yahoo, and Drudge were accessible.
The sites that weren't accessible were still pingable. Even though I couldn't get to DSLR, the DSLR site monitors did not show any problems.
It was not a DNS problem. It was not a simple routing problem.

From the way it looked in California, it appeared to be an issue with their ibone, which feeds transit from Global Crossing and Level3. For whatever reason, the ibone appeared to be unavailable causing all traffic to be pushed out of direct AT&T transit, which was getting saturated. |

2 edits | reply to jjoshua I could get to some sites without a problem from S.NJ. But I couldn't get to dslreports.com; nytimes.com; and a few others unless I used a proxy server.
I called Comcast and never got a human being, but I did get the recording saying they were working on a major problem for PA, NJ, DE. Then I could choose to be notified by phone when the problem cleared up. The automated phone call came 5 hours AFTER the problem was fixed.
From traceroutes I did see that the routes I took to dslreports.com were not going thru the normal ibone path. And the alternate route was going all over the place thru the midwest before reaching N.NJ. So they were having routing problems and it looks like alternate routes got so flooded that pulling up a web page was really hit and miss. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page |

Do you have a general time frame as to when this was happening? I run periodic traceroutes (and archive them) to a couple places (co-location facilities I have boxes in). I can go back and see if there was any obvious network degredation during that itme. |

This can't be right.
Only Satellite goes out. Comcast never does. I had DTV for a few years before going to FIOS, and I never lost service but a min or two maybe 2 times a year when it was really raining hard. |

that comcast had an outage of this magnitude...
or that one of their execs was squandering his time monitoring "twitter" under the guise of looking for details!
I think that personnel needs to track this guy down, seize his pc..and see what else he's up to while on company time.

Just when you think Comcast can't go any lower... they find a door to the basement:

Instead of getting rid of the Sandvine crap, they are trying to apply it to all of their traffic. The bright side is that it becomes painfully obvious that resetting TCP sessions is not reasonable network management. |
