Its not really Earthlink, its "city-wide" wifi that sucks. 802.11x was never meant for this type of deployment, and it will consistently fail when used in anything resembling an urban environment for commercial use.

WiMax?

Isn't this one of the reasons WiMax was made? to cover an entire city with a single tower and minimal maintenance work?

Regardless of whether or not city-wide wifi sucks... Earthlink sucks.

Well, yes, sort of. WiMAX won't cover an entire city with a single tower (see Clearwire's availability, even in small cities) but it helps to reduce the number of towers needed.

Actually, with the new leadership in place, they are turning around a bit.

The new CEO Rolla Huff seems to be making decisions that are best for the company from a proactive point of view instead of a reactive point of view.

From my inside sources, the bleeding has slowed down a bit but it hasn't completely stopped. I just wonder with all of the FCC rules regarding the cable and telcos not having to share their lines, how EarthLink will survive in the long haul. Mix in with that their customer service and support. Ouch.

If earthlink is turning around- then why don't they bring back all the jobs they sent to whoknows where? The bleeding can't be stopping.

Nah, it didn't quite start then. Maybe about a year later, when they started downsliding. I was on the Mindspring side of the event, and it wasn't exactly the greatest the last year or two I had it.

actually no, wimax was designed as a backhaul only technology that got twisted into a metro and suburbian type of AP and CPE type of setup.

WiMax is not, and never will be the way they had originally designed or rather hoped it would be.

its not ratified, and god only knows when it will be.
atleast here in the usa.

Earthlink works for me

I'm conected to Earthlink WiFi at my home and my conection is much faster than the 1.5 mb that AT&T can get me. It's also cheaper than the cable companies can offer!!!

Re: Earthlink sucks.

I remember when Earthlink first started up in the bay area. I was one of his first dial-up customers. To this day I still have access to the Earthlink network via dial-up free of charge. It's a shame the company has turned into just that - a massive congolomorate that could care less.

It wasn't so bad before Earthlink. I remember being able to hop on the slower city wifi when my road runner connection was out. I could access it from work, from home or a few of the shopping centers around town. We're a fairly small community with a population of 300k or so.
