Smoke Please!

Well, if they decide to allow cell phone conversations on the plane..

Could we have a HEPA filtered plexiglass booth in the back of the plane for us smokers? I'd gladly pay a buck or two to go have a smoke. Otherwise, I will probably have a nicotine fit and kill one of the phone chatters..

I'm cool with peeps texting with phone in silent mode..

A giant corporation strikes again.

I guess Verizon who currently owns Airfone wants to sell Airfone to LiveTV. Please see this link: »www22.verizon.com/airfone/ If airline passengers are permitted to bypass Airfone the value of Airfone to LiveTV goes down the crapper and Verizon loses. I am sure our government does not care if a passenger is disturbed by someone near them talking on a cellphone, otherwise they would ban Airfone service. This is more likely big business getting the best government and laws money can buy.

Re: A giant corporation strikes again.

Airfone service is expensive, and not designed for casual chatting. Using a cell phone on a plane will require the installation of hardware to route the signals to a satellite, either directly or via VOIP. Make no mistake about this: people will taka A LOT more than they do now, especially if the cost is free or very cheap. People do not talk to strangers on a plane very much or very often, but stuck on a long flight with little to do, a phone becomes very tempting. If you are next to someone talking, where can you go? It won't be like on the ground where you can just move away. Lacking a dedicated, sound proofed area for people to use, cell phone use should not be allowed unrestricted. As far as leaving it up to the airlines, PLEASE! Look at the mess they are in now, which is a direct result of deregulation. Don't give them more authority over our lives in flight.

in-flight calls

I don't enjoy being next to a phone-chatty person on a flight; however, my dislike of their use of a phone does not over-ride their right to "free speech". I have watched the past 40 years as all personal rights have become slowly eroded. The line in the constitution "the rights of the individual shall not be infringed" has been increasingly ignored by those in power. Let me be clear, I don't think I have ever placed a cell call while on a plane, but I will defend the right of another person to do so. Legislating socially accepted behavior is a very slippery slope, and I do not want to see what further inroads happen to personal freedom. For those who are "bothered" by chatty-Susie on a plane, learn some bleeding tolerance. We are all individuals with different needs and priorities. It is easy to target ANY of your hobbies and interests as being "not in the public's need or good” as long as a simple majority of people do not share your interests or needs. Some day your rights may be infringed, and you can only hope a few good people stand and make a defense with you. Addertooth
