Have to dump redundant Bell South IS & Marketing types

All mergers result in loss of mgt staff in the support departments like IS, Marketing, Accounting, Legal, etc.

That is partly how they justify these mergers to Wall St - more efficient operations with lower overhead.

Is AT&T is milking POTS users?

I've got POTS service, and feel AT&T is squeezing me. It'd be less expensive to move my POTS lines to wireless. Does AT&T expect to just milk POTS users forever with high prices and poor service?

Well, with me being one of their newly displaced managers, it's still a kick in the balls no matter what way you cut it...

If it doesn’t fit FORCE IT! If it breaks then it needed to be replaced anyways.

Sounds to me like the only thing this will bring about is more sales people, more adverts, and ATT making a bigger attempt to cram it's services down everyone's throats. :/

goes without saying

you want to prop the bottom line... fire workers..
then you hire them back at the entry level salaries.. saves the company a bunch of money upfront.. although it's debatable whether it actually saves the company money in the long run.. in terms of LOST customers/prospects because the new people don't know the job quite yet..

although you really wouldn't know it.. that's how corporate america does business, they constantly roll over on employees just so that they can avoid career long hires whom would be entitled to retirement benefits, healthcare benefits, etc, etc... those obligations are cut short and the employees are forced into state welfare programs short term.. the same things done to illegal aliens.. although by the time the american worker is forced to see if they qualify.. they don't... since they illegal alien's work is off the books, they can lie to qualify.

Except that they are not hiring them back, they are hiring contracting houses (who are hiring sub-contracting houses, who are in turn hiring more sub-contracting houses... you get the point) who hire the former employees and take away a large percentage of the contract. In the end, the former employees have a lower quality job, no health care, no retirement plans, no rights, endless hours, no training, no outlook, nor any career planning, mistreatment by other full time employees (red badge vs. blue badge = like a concentration camp), and at the end get kicked out with no notice because they are simply disposable.

I haven't been through this personally, but I've seen it happen to my colleagues.

But the layoff due to "synergies" of the merger was announced earlier. This new layoff is separate.

Most of the people leaving in our area are in their mid fifties but have their 30 years in. They are also the most respected and tired competing against the con artists that don't care how they make the crazy numbers.

@comcast.net

Why would you want to work for them?

After all the huge layoffs since the 80's and beyond who the heck would want to work for them. Here is your new job... and oh by the way we will fire you in 5 years or less. Ump Dat. They don't care about the people that work for them. Period.

Hope everything works out for you; BellSouth should've stayed on its own.

When FIOS is completed at VZ, I really hate to see the carnage among non-FIOS techs.

AT&T's Union is bracing for contract negotiations: "CWA locals representing members at AT&T across the union kicked off the "one year to a new contract" mobilization with leafleting and workplace actions across the districts in advance of 2009 negotiations. AT&T Mobility members also joined in, to show support for a united CWA at AT&T and to gear up for the AT&T Mobility Orange negotiations; that contract expires in February 2009." »www.cwa-union.org/news/at-t-memb···ion.html

AT&T didn't announce this is if they aren't going after the Union next year.

Makes Sense

More and more people are dropping their landline phones, or switching over to VoIP solutions that offer the same product AT&T has offered for damn near 100 years at a cheaper rate. I expect to see AT&T's landline operations continue to shrink yet their wireless and broadband services should grow. Now, if only they would look to the future instead of looking to next quarter, they would be set. Verizon sees the big picture with FIOS, AT&T just wants to please investors. I believe this will hurt AT&T in the next ten years as they will be one step behind Verizon's superior offerings.

simply put: yes. they will continue the milking until the cow is dry.

i recommend you leave for greener pastures (voip or wireless only).

Yes. America, home of $10/mo Caller ID. Remember a prepaid cellphone can be cheaper than $10/mo based on usage.

Just because you have a Copper Line doesn't mean you have "Plain Old Telephone Service." What AT&T is doing, is squeezing everything it can from it's Copper Infrastructure. I think this was a bad decision on AT&T's part. FTTH is the way of the Future!

Re: Makes Sense

But being behind Verizon doesn't matter to at&t- don't forget, it's too expensive for the telcos to try to compete against each other.
