Time for a drink!

This has been a tough but not insurmountable week for me.
I am heading for the wine rack to break open some of my finest 9.99 wine. I found a white wine on-line called "Pure Evil", from the Aussies.
Highly recommend it, or on a Friday night - I recommend any brand.
Cheers everyone!

Low cost ultra-portables are coming on gangbusters

Over the past six months or so, Asus, Everex, and HP have managed to bring low-cost ultraportable notebooks to market. But dozens of other computer makers have promised to bring out their own mini-notebooks. Some will run Linux, while others will be preloaded with Windows XP or Vista. Some will have flash memory, while others will have hard drives. But every one will be smaller, lighter, and cheaper than most existing laptop computers. Here's a roundup of some of the computers that have been announced or are already available.
A list of all the new Ultra portable PCs follows at the above link. Sales of this type and size of computer is exploding.

I'm on one of those ultraportables right now. The Asus (2G Surf model). Machine gets a little warm, other then that, it's perfect, although I heavily modified. (Basically using a Class 6 SD-Card as the 2nd partition in the "UnionFS") Linux, no crashes, so that part is good, add lots of repositories (DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!!!) and have everything I need with still lots of room left on my card. Perfect.

I bought my U810 last November, and it's become my primary mobile computing device! Granted it's not perfect (slow processor, double-mapped keys, Vista), but the convenience factor is overwhelming! Only 1.6 lbs, and easily fits inside a large coat pocket.

With low cost ultraportables about to hit the market, expect to see a lot of these babies show up everywhere, slowly replacing the big and bulky notebook computers we've had for decades now.

My U810 is so convenient, I've used it to write this message while sitting on the toilet!

Re: Gas prices

^^ I hear you. I am planning on changing places of work, and moving downtown so a brisk walk will be my commute. Sell the car! No insurance, no gas! Of course a bicycle will be used for my "lengthy trips". :d
(Just a side note, I do drive a very fuel efficient 07 Civic - for now anyhow :d)

And off to the Belgian tavern tonight! I'll be drowning myself in a frothy sour Flemish ale!

That's because they keep selling you on that this is a supply problem or an Oil Shortage. (IE "We need to Drill Arctic Refuge" for example...) It isn't. There's not an oil shortage at the moment. What there is is carefully managed FUEL supply, ie the refiners and suppliers keep supplies of refined products tight, as this promotes high prices and fat profits. (Which their quarterly earnings reports clearly show, they are making insane money.)

Add this to very stupid energy policy and you have today's situation. Take the ethanol joke (on us!). The argument goes like this:

"Let's put ethanol in gas. We'll use less gas, so we'll need less oil. Prices drop."

OK. Reality check. It takes MORE energy to make a gallon of ethanol then you get back when you burn it... So this actually INCREASES energy usage. 2nd: Ethanol can't be transmitted in the fuel down pipelines like gasoline is, so you have truckloads of ethanol running back and forth like mad so they can add the ethanol to the fuel at the distribution centers before it goes to the stations. All this extra work and expense INCREASES the price per gallon of gasoline with ethanol fuel over just plain gasoline. Plus you get a little less mileage from your vehicle, so you burn a little bit more fuel overall to go the same distance.

Really, the whole thing is a joke, a really bad one.... on us. Oh and let's not forget the Government subsidies to huge agri business to build and operate these ethanol plants.... PLUS the corn they are diverting to ethanol production has driven the price of corn (and as a result, cattle feed up 40%...) which results in meat prices increasing, too.

It's all classic examples of a simple idea with bad science behind it.

Re: Gas prices

No shit.

We'll be the first country in the history of mankind to burn our own food supply just to get to soccer practice.

Ethanol is going to end up being a disaster on a global scale. People will end up starving to death over this boondoggle.

I'm not looking to bash anyone in particular, but our government is really f-ed up at this point.

That's all of them. Democrat, Republican, etc. All of them. No one seems to have the best interests of the people in mind anymore. It's all about bringing home the pork and staying in office.

As Nero fiddles, Rome burns.

I fear we are witnessing the end of the great experiment that is the USA.

Oh well, it lasted a lot longer than the dudes who set it up thought it would...

Re: Gas prices

Ethanol is a huge cash cow for agri-business, but economically, it blows for the rest of us.

Our energy policy is so weak. We waste huge amounts, we're weak on conservation, and we're weak on renew-ables, too.

One thing that may come out of these high energy prices (along with the pain and suffering of the consumer) is we *may* actually get other sensible energy technologies moving in a big way... and we may also get much more energy efficient vehicles.... But will we crash our economy first. Signs point to yes, unfortunately.

Re: Gas prices

We need to have a President (Could careless who) to stand up and do something about this VERY weak energy policy. Perhaps go as far as investing hundreds of billions of dollars into Hydrogen and/or Biofuel and just go all out because were so far behind in development. It makes me sick hearing GM and other company's blab about making alternate energy cars.
I think the worse one is the E85 cars the biggest joke I've ever heard. I've seen a hundred or so with in a year in this area and there are ZERO gas stations that carry it in this area.

You can keep believing that but the reality exists that both China and India have been using more and more oil daily and the supply effectively hasn't increased, and the USA's own use of gasoline has increased as well yet we haven't allowed a refinery refinery to be built in forever. It's likely to get worse in the near future as Mexico's supply reduces to a trickle.

We need to begin using our own resources if for no other reason than to make it so we can't be jerked around as easily (such as I suspect is happening with Mexico). I fear the privilege to whine about the caribou and the scenery ran out 10 years ago and now we're going to pay for it.

Re: Gas prices

Yes, those are true statements... However, there is still not a shortage of oil at the moment. Did you know that we actually have been exporting fuel to Europe and Asia because it's more profitable? Did you know that Oil tankers full of oil often wait for MONTHS parked offshore to dock at the port and offload? (for timing reasons, not due to traffic etc)

Check this out:

January 2008, we exported:

364,000 barrels of crude oil.
4,095,000 barrels of gasoline
1,900,000 barrels of kerosene
10,398,000 barrels of Fuel Oil

Plus tons of byproducts, natural gas products, other petrochemicals, etc etc yadda yadda.

Why did we do that if we have such a shortage? Because we don't really, and they got a higher price from overseas buyers....

Almost all the oil refining and distribution in the USA is now in the hands of just a few, giant players. They can control the supply, and keep stocks tight for economic gain without actually running out of fuel which would cost them money and cause panic.

As for domestic oil production, it's surging. At $120 a barrel those old slow wells are now goldmines again. The boom is apparent. Lots of people with old oil leases or mineral rights are really getting a windfall atm.

As for the refineries, they aren't trying to build new ones... increasing the supply of refined fuels would drive the price down. In fact they actively shutdown old facilities or idle them, even now.... However, they are expanding and modernizing many facilities as well... the oil industry is experiencing a massive boom in construction and expansion at the moment, driven by the record profits.

The last time I had a car with an engine that small was in Japan in 1968 and it was a Honda S600. I really liked that car, but it wasn't something I could bring back with me. It had four carbs for four cylinders and they had to be individually tuned. Not only that, but it was right-hand drive.

I leased from gm 3 metro's when they were available. Two of em where geo metro and one chevy metro when gm absorbed the geo name. These cars were made by Suzuki and it was their Swift. 50 miles a gallon. 3 cylinders. Small, but were a great getting around town, going to work car. When I had it, I was commuting 60 miles a day and was filling up once a week. That car would be very handy today. I always wondered why Suzuki quit making them.

Is AOL traffic growth indicating an AOL turnaround?

AOL announced on Friday that it posted double-digit growth in March, posting new traffic records for the former high-flying Internet darling.

Page views on AOL's programming sites jumped 35 percent in March, compared to a year ago, while unique visitors rose 11 percent to 56.5 million users in the same comparison period, according to ComScore Media Metrix.

"Our strong growth is a direct result of rebuilding each and every one of our vertical Web sites over the past 12 months, with the goal of providing consumers highly relevant and rich experiences that focus on key passion points," Bill Wilson, AOL Vertical Programming executive vice president, said in a statement.

Some of AOL's core sites that received a makeover included Money & Finance, which rose 24 percent in year-over-year page views in March, News, which climbed 20 percent, and Sports, which rose a whopping 148 percent.

During the past year, AOL has launched a number of new sites, ranging from men's site Asylum.com to Spinner.com for Indie music fans to personal finance consumer news site WalletPop.com.
Looks like AOL is actually making a little progress to get from under its horrid decisions of the past to stick with dial-up much longer than they should have.

I think TigerDirect bought up the name and the some rights, as far as I can tell CompUSA.com and TigerDirect.com now sell the same stuff at the same price.... Anyway, some of the stores have re-opened...

why, that needs a prescription, too!

if you can get 768K/128K DSL, then why can't you get Cable, Wireless Broadband (Sprint, at&t, etc.), etc.?

I hate the USA!!

no... i'm not a terrorist... i'm an unhappy citizen. There is NO PROGRESS in this country!! Nothing to help people in trouble (housing, health, etc.)... "just let 'em sink and eat your dinner, you'll forget all about this tomorrow.", NOTHING to advance anything technologically (cellular service still sucks - coverage has BARELY expanded since about 2004; Internet service is barely going anywhere - sure, some people can get their 6 Meg connections, others can get 50 Meg connections, but most are still stuck with dial-up or 768K DSL!; No national health care, people are going broke because of medical bills, or non-covered by insurance medical issues or non-covered-by-insurance because of a Pre-Existing condition; and if you wanted me to, I could probably come up with a rather long list of things we need to work on, but aren't).

I'm sorry, but I'm not feeling any hope for the U.S. right now. Call me "UnAmerican", but face it, until someone pushes EXTEREMELY hard for something, like national health care, or something of the like, we aren't going to get anywhere. That's what makes me really sad .

my "i hate the USA!" quote is only temporary, but it will have to stand until the gridlock is broken; i can't fucking stand (**apologies for swearing, but that's how i feel**) that we aren't doing anything to help anyone in this country, and probably won't be until someone who wants to change all this enters the white house, and instead of sitting on his/her ass watching everything crumble, decides to sit down, sign some papers, make some speeches, and start a revolution to help the country!!!!!!!!

sorry about the length...

sorry about my long, evil post, but.. .this is a Friday Open Thread, and I really needed to vent.

i'm starting to feel better, knowing that an election is on the way, and I realized after my anger rage was over, that, no, I don't hate the USA, just the people running it. I hope that's more neutral, so that I don't offend those 17 Bush supporters...

Re: sorry about the length...

I believe that there are two things that should be done as soon as possible. One: Adjustable Rate Mortgages for homes should be banned, as should balloon payments, etc. Only simple interest loans should be allowed. Two: No one should be allowed to borrow more than 90 percent of the selling price of a home. Period. If those two rules had been in effect, the mortgage crisis would not have happened. Far fewer people would have been able to buy a home, but would that be so bad? At least, would it not be better than millions going into foreclosure?

Gotta hand it to Israel.... they don't screw around

You know, when that story broke about how Israeli warplanes had flown into Syria, and dropped bombs on SOMETHING, and perhaps even shot down some Syrian jets, and then Syria was like (Whistle, Whistle) Nothing to see here.... Move along.... (Whistle, Whistle)

And the mainstream media barely covered on it, and where's all the Muslim outrage about "Jewish Aggression!"... ... I knew right then that some serious crap that they weren't supposed to be doing was going on... And the Israelis went in and removed it from existence.

Of course it was rumored at the time to be nuclear related.

Well, it was. North Koreans helped Syria to build a nuclear reactor, which would lead to Syria being the next to develop nuclear weapons....

Israel said... "I don't think so... Kiss it bye bye..." and BOOM BOOM BOOM it disappeared. Just like Saddam's reactor in Iraq in 1981.

See, you gotta hand it to Israel in this regard: When they see a legitimate threat, they don't screw around. Unlike our country, we talk tough and go after the easy targets but when it comes to the real threats we waffle.

Then again, you could say we don't have to take it out if we knew the Israeli's would do it for us...

BEFORE......and After!

Notice how little coverage this got in the US press when it happened? Or that Syria was building a reactor? I'm sure our intelligence agencies knew about it... but did you see Bush or anyone coming out saying anything about it? Would we have attacked Syria? Why do I doubt it?

Thumbs up to Israel. A problem solved. I feel confident that if Iran starts getting close to nuclear weapons, they can expect a Care Package from Israel as well.

I may be getting divorced soon.....

Wife and I have been having some challenges in our relationship. Mother in law came down to visit about 2 weeks ago.

I had an issue with MIL and tried talking it out with her but she started cursing me out in my own home. Told her to leave and wife said her mom is not going anywhere because it is her house, too.

Anyway, I ended up leaving for a couple of days and terribly missed my daughter. However, I think that the MIL issue was just the icing on the cake of problems that were going on between me and my wife.

I don't want to break our family up but my head is saying stay and work it out but my heart is saying "I don't want to fight anymore (not physically) and it is time to let it go!"

I am not perfect and have messed up but she has, too. I feel the issue with her mom just drove us further apart but we already had that door opened.

Man, this is one of the toughest things I ever had to deal with in life (welcome to being an adult). This is one thing that can make a grown man cry and it has but when do you get to the point where you say "enough is enough" and it is time to move on??

Divorce is painful to even think about. I want to believe we can work through this but now having MIL angry at me is just compounding the problems.

My Muni Wi-FI Adventure

I was in Spokane for a little convention last weekend. The Hotel wireless was spotty at best and I was able to connect to Spokane Hot Zone The downtown “free” network from my room but not the Hotel’s network. I can see why muni Wi-Fi will be a failure. First there rationing; I only get two hours a day compare to unlimited form the hotel. Second upload speed is dismal at best; I wanted to upload some pictures form the con to my live journal account. It was no go due to slow speed. Finally from Friday on to Sunday I could connect to the internet 25% of the time. I finally found one of the panel rooms open where I got a good connection to the hotel network.
It just shoes why I believe government should not be in the broadband provider business. Sounds like what government will do with healthcare.
