and I just got a rate increase

How coincidental that yesterday I was notified that my monthly rate will go up $6/mo.

Re: and I just got a rate increase

Do you have alternatives?

I recently had my father drop Comcast (which used to be Insight just a few months ago; Comcast bought this service area), and use Verizon DSL.

The primary reason I wanted him to switch was because of torrent throttling and the caps, which I understand aren't even enforced fairly (same price, different caps).

Price was also a minor factor.

Speed? Not so much. Downloads are somewhat slower, but uploads are twice as fast.

I think Comcast is evil. I thought Charter was bad, but I'd pick Charter over Comcast any day.

How much illegal downloading do you do at your parents?

Let's make some things clear here:

When I said that, I was talking about the principle. BitTorrent, in and of itself, isn't illegal. Here's an analogy:

The roads and the Interstate aren't illegal (Internet). Cargo vans aren't illegal (BitTorrent). But if drug dealer loads up a cargo van with heroin, then that's illegal (Use).

But it's not the cargo van that's illegal, it's what it was being used for. Is every cargo van being used to transport drugs? Likewise, not every use of BitTorrent is illegal.

Comcast's policy is the equivalent of saying "only X number of cargo vans can flow through the road on a given day, regardless of what's inside of the cargo vans."

To directly answer your question: I don't do any downloading at my parents' house, illegal or otherwise, because I don't live there. I can't even use Verizon DSL or Comcast cable, because I live in AT&T land and Charter land.

Got to pay for the new building somehow... Along with the CEO / Exec's Cushy offices. Did you actually think they'd write these off and not pass on the expense to the customers? HAH.

What a way to go ..I bet they don't own the building !

The "financiers" own the building and Comcast probably didn't have to pay any money down ! They become renters !
Then write off the rent as ops cost on taxes .. get a 100 year lease with rent appreciation clauses to suit them.

Now the real prize would be, if the rental cost per sq ft is less than the average price in philli ! or better yet, less than the aggregate cost of there current digs, to boot.

Correct. The building is owned by a REIT and Comcast is only leasing space....and it's for 15 1/2 years.

Some other companies in Philly have threatened to leave the city and been given huge tax incentives. I think there are also incentives for leasing in a new building.

Also, I had an interview at one of Comcast's current offices in Philly and it was actually quite nice

Their name is only on the building because...

they are the primary tenant.

Comcast leases about 90 percent of the building.

My company does the same thing. Builds and develops a facility, then immediately sells it to their real estate holding company, and then they lease it back so they can write off all the costs against taxes.

Sneaky, but smart.

Re: Their name is only on the building because...

Maybe they don't.... Did they "commission" the building? IE is it built specifically for them?

Without investigating further, I really don't know.... Sometimes investors build a building and then look for clients.... However in this case.... 90% of the building? Usually that means Comcast commissioned or had the building built for them, they just won't own it (they'll have a real estate holding company own it)

It Isn't Owned by Comcast

This building isn't owned by Comcast. Comcast has a 15 1/2 year lease occupying about 90% of the space
About two-thirds of the leased retail space will be open in the Market at Comcast Center by the grand opening June 6, said John Gattuso, a senior vice president with Liberty Property Trust, which developed and owns the building in a joint venture with CommerzLeasing und Immobilien AG.

cancel cable tv

get rid of cable tv from every service provider.. it's 40% commercials, and 60% aggravation.. i seldom bother to watch cnn anymore as well because of all the drug ads and nonsense advertisements. cnn has become the mtv of news, so why pay for it anymore, screw them... if that's the "best, most trusted name in news" then news has gone to the toilet.

now the rest of you need to line up and say "i'm fed up and i'm not going to pay for it anymore".. come on, it's easy.. with $4 gasoline, your bound to be looking to cut expenses anyway.. so do it on the backs of comcast and others by canceling the tv service.

if you look at the trend this past decade with the music and phone industries.. the rest of the entertainment industry is overdue for a revolution in the ways we get video programming. this will mostly affect cable companies to the extent that they raise prices and offer less value than the competition which is mostly a bottomless pit and free or much lower cost than mainstream cable.

bittorrent is 100% sticking it to the entertainment, broadcast, and cable industries, and 0% pay. these industries do not fight hard enough for our money and take it for granted, in much the same way POTS telecom carriers took for granted the ever rising surcharges that litter customers phone bills. voip changed the game and telecom is now back in the hands of consumers. even if you wanted to steer clear of copyright violations, there is a market for your money with on-demand (95% sticking it to them 5% pay).. you just need a dvr that can accept video via ethernet or wifi. this is primarily why cable companies have been very hesitant to start a broadband war with telcos using docsis 3. once the spigot is opened.. what's to prevent customers from canceling tv subscriptions? not much.
like it or not, this trend is here to stay.

I did the same thing. Was with directv from 1995 to 2008 and have not regretted it. Got tired of paying $50+ to watch non stop commercials and stupidity. I emailed my local NBC affiliate and told them I was going to finally follow their go green brainwashing and shut off the cable. The less TV I watched the smaller my footprint and I would see more green in my pocket canceling directv.

Then told directv since they wanted their customer service in India and the Phillipines they needed to get their customers there too. It's nice to have $50 more dollars to offset what all is going up. They've been begging hard for me to come back.

more union disasters

FYI:
this building uses water-less toilets, which require less plumbing. in order to not cause a union walk-out and keep the work on schedule, former Mayor Street forced a compromise where they had the pay the plumbers union to install all the normally standard toilet water pipes to all the bathrooms even though they werent being used.

that's philly and good 'ole mayor street for ya.

Since most so called enviro friendly tech doesn't work, it is a good thing they ran the water pipes. It's almost a guarantee that those waterless toilets are going to fail.

They moved Philadelphia?

That's funny. When I resided in New York City I had to travel South to go to Philadelphia not West. I should have heard the loud bang and felt the earth shake when Philadelphia was moved.

I agree they had to increase my rates by about $12.00 to help pay for the new building. Of course their excuse was that programming cost has increased.

Uhm, I hate to burst your bubble, Comcast...BUT....

The USX tower in Pittsburgh has you beat-by 13 stories no less-and it's been there since 1970!

Yes, the Comcast tower has it beat height wise-but that's because I nelieve it has a spire atop it-the USX building does not.

Re: Uhm, I hate to burst your bubble, Comcast...BUT....

I was thinking that too being from around there! but then i looked up the height... it has more stories but isn't as high... USX was the tallest until this unfortinuatly.... I think the comcast building is a whole 100 ft taller somehow...

USX Tower
Roof 841 ft
Floor count 64
Floor area 2,300,000

Comcast Tower
Roof 975 ft
Floor count 57
Floor area 1,238,000 ft

I dont know if there is a mast ontop of the comcast tower but USX is definatly flat as a pancake at the top with no antennas or masts to make it taller on paper... but USX does have it majorly beat on floor space almost twice as much area!

Interesting...

Comcast is getting a shiny new tower, while meanwhile Verizon is selling off their towers- at least, I know they were looking for (and couldn't find) a buyer for their central tower in Boston, and got rid of their former headquarters in New York City... I wonder if it's a sign of how well the two companies are doing?

1. Who are they renting from -- who financed this?

2. What was the name of Tony Werner's former employer?

3. Any relation?

4. Why am I replying to this dumb old thread? Nobody is going to read it.
