| Vonage and several others potentially have the same problem. Here is the problem....
VOIP providers like the Canadian company AND Vonage allow their customers to take their numbers with them regardless of the rate center (like a New York number in Texas). By doing this they cannot be included in the 911 and e911 services that are offered virtually everywhere in the USA.
Solution...
Force all companies that provide VOIP services (yes this means Vonage too) to restrict numbers to the proper rate center (as it should have been all along) and force them to all provide e911 services and not provide phone service until confirmation has been received that they are properly registered with the county 911 facility serving them.
It should also be noted that virtually ALL cable company phone service provides e911 service and will not provide dialtone until they have proper confirmation of proper registration and that the service is verified working.

| Re: Vonage and several others potentially have the same problem. Gee, I wonder what will happen to all those expats down in Mexico happily using Vonage Unlimited with a local number where they used to live, so their friend and family can reach them with a local call (many ported their old landline which they had for 20-30 years to Vonage) | |

| VoIP Issue The choppy and fading voice with VoIP IS and industry known problem. The providers know that these issues exist. That is actually the exact reason why Covad pulled VoIP from the market to revamp it and re-release it in September. Its better than to lose a few customers here and there, than to sell someone something they're going to have problems with. It's pretty cut and dry.
PS: Sincerest regrets to the kids' family.
