Instead of threating citys. Why dont they just step up and say kindly they cant make profit from it. Then give the city the option to buy it from them.
If a company came to treaten me like that. I would tell them to stick it where the sun dont shine. I'm nice as a teddy bear. But cross the line and WorldWar III is going to happen. |

| Philly has bigger problems....
Philly has bigger problems than Wi-Fi and Earthlink. It seems like every other month, another police officer is slain in the line of duty. Shootings over petty arguments are commonplace and murder is rampant.
Nutter would be right to tell Earthlink to take a hike.
In large parts of the city, the social fabric of society has collapsed and teenage children don't think twice about picking up a gun to settle their differences. It is a sad state of affairs.
As a Philly native and metro area resident it pains me every time I hear of another "murder filled" weekend in the city.
That said, I think Nutter is probably the best Mayor to come to Philly in a while. He's smart, well spoken, and most importantly straight forward. I pray for him and the city I will always consider my hometown..... -- Petty people are disproportionably corrupted by petty power

said by N3OGH :Philly has bigger problems than Wi-Fi and Earthlink. I agree. Philly can use municipal funds to solve way more pressing problems than WiFi access. Especially since it has so few users. Nutter should tell Earthlink to just go ahead and dismantle the network. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page |

Like I have been saying for years, Wi-Fi is not the Holy Grail for Broadband. When people hear of Wi-Fi they think this will replace their Broadband Connection and they are looking for the same speed, reliability, and service. So most of these Wi-Fi Networks are less than 1Mbps, not fast enough to replace your Home Broadband. |

Earthlink has been a zombie wandering the back woods of the Internet for well over a year now. They are furiously trying to prop up the corpse and walk it around to distract the shareholders from that funny smell.
Philly should just tell them to go pound sand. As mentioned elsewhere they've got much bigger issues to attend to than a failed muni WiFi project. If it is worth anything Earthlink should be able to find a buyer even at 10 cents on the dollar. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

| reply to N3OGH Hell I think you got it ass backwards. Muni Wifi can help jumpstart Philly's economy and that of all other midwestern cities who are economically depressed. Just think of it. Drug dealers can plan their sales virtually before hitting the pavement. Gang members can post their beatings and shootings on youtube. The list goes on and on as to why philly and all other cities should piss away cash. What troubles? As long as the crackheads, gangbangers, etc got internet, all is happy right? |

| reply to TKJunkMail Well it depends on if there was a contract or not. If there was, Earthlink can jump ship and still sue the city for breaching said agreement. I'm sure the lawyers will solve it. They always do. What would we do without lawyers (sarcasm)? They always walk away with fat pockets while everyone else is the loser, no matter who ultimately "wins". Both parties pay a bundle, see little, while these guys make fortunes. |

said by alchav :So most of these Wi-Fi Networks are less than 1Mbps, not fast enough to replace your Home Broadband. Bingo, 802.11B can have max 4.5 mbit/s shared between the AP and 1 user (assuming no other users, and perfect connection with no error correction needed). G is 17mbit/s shared among all users. Cable for example is 40 mbit/s, perhaps a muni wifi network running N equipment with all N clients can pull that off, but N isn't even a standard yet..... |
