Very true... I have a Nextel Blackberry 7100i, and never receive spam (filters work well). On my AT&T Samsung ZX-20, I had to have AT&T disable messaging altogether, as both lines we receiving ringtone spam ad messaging  Of course, AT&T has some 'controls', but then you have to pay fees to use it.
In general - wireless companies love txt messaging though, as its VERY high profit margin

They should also do something about the spam txts that automatically deduct minutes off of pay-as-you-go plans. My Mom, who is definitely not a technically inclined woman, was distraught to learn that simply by reading the txt messages she was getting she was having all her minutes she'd purchased used up. One message alone deducted 100 minutes. I told her to simply not read ANY txt messages, nobody she knows is txt'ing her so just ignore them. I set her phone to not alert her to incoming messages.
So spammers have made what could be a useful system (txt'ing) into something that must be ignored. |

Is it really going to be any better when the the phone companies manage to block outside spam, and send their own instead? They will then be advertising at you (selling you to marketers) - and making you pay for it. This lucrative prospect is the only reason they restrain spam at all.
What's wanted is a sender-pays rule. No one should be able to impose costs on anyone else without the other person's consent. And as the article indicates, you can't always know whether the text or call is one you want before opening/answering.
European cellphone customers have sender-pays, and wonder why Americans put up with an "everyone pays" rule. And the phone companies know that if people start noticing the injustice of "everyone pays", they'll demand sender-pays and the companies won't get away with double-charging anymore. |

Just as email has its general use, spammers and marketers have 'ruined' it. Many sms can be sent to phonenumber@carrier.com

That's why I love my Unlimited Incoming Plan with Sprint. The majority of my calls are incoming and it doesn't come out of my minutes with this plan. Doesn't matter what time it is either. |

I'm one of the remaining holdouts I guess in that I do not subscribe to text messaging. Unfortunately being a t-mobile customer I get it anyway and also the joy of calling a CSR every month to get 15 cent to $1.50 credits on my bill for incoming spam. They claim they can't disable it or give me credit, but I always get the bill reduced (including tax) after I waste enough time elevating the situation to a manager (average about 10-15 minutes calling 611). You have to be really persistent and even hang up and get a different CSR. They are raking in the money from spam and they know it. Most people don't have the time or desire to fight for such amounts. I will be leaving t-mobile for good as soon a the contract expires, which isn't soon enough. |

However, I'd love a "sender pays" system. Then I could send txt to my dad, who would normally have to pay 15-20 cents for the message. On my sidekick plan only voice costs extra, so that'd work out perfect. |

I don't have a pay-as-you-go phone, but I NEVER read text messages, and I don't get charged for them. |

Was able to disable text messaging from the T-Mobile website, but not much can be done for all the telemarketers who call and say this is not a telemarketer!

I think text messaging is totally stupid. Why would I want to waste so much time typing on some half sized keyboard, when all cell phones that I know of have voice mail, if the person doesn't answer?

| I rarely do get spam texts from T-Mobile...once in a blue moon. And when I do, I just call customer service and they're usually nice enough to give me some freebies in order to compensate for the spam. They can't give credit but freebies aren't too shabby at all.
SMS isn't worth the extra $100+ it adds to the bill every year.
