But seriously, they did reduce overall latency by cutting in half the # of trips up and down to handle one internet transaction:
One of the satellite's special features is an on-board Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switch. In other satellite Internet systems data sent to the satellite has to be sent to an earth station, demodulated, switched to its destination and then remodulated and sent again via the satellite to reach its destination. -- My BLOG .. .. | Max speeds for a std home antenna are more reasonable
uplink communications at 1.5M bps and downlink at 155M bps using a compact 45-centimeter antenna And I suspect they will have tiers with speeds lower than that for most users. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page |

I'll put up with some latency for speeds like that- though I don't play online games much. |

| Kizuna is still kicking the hell out of HughesNet's Spaceway
Hmm maybe you think Hughes knows this and sees a lot more money in Sat TV? Why Spaceway-2 was re-assigned TV duty?
To me the bottom line is there are so many natural restrictions to sat internet, it is only useful for mobile applications or as last resort for remote locations. It will never be mainstream in the near future and should not be promoted or advertised as such. -- | Speedstream 4200 Modem - 3m/384 plan | W98-W2KSP4-XPSP2 - All AMD | Buffalo WHR G54S with Tomato 1.13 | 3 downstream switches feeding 6 total clients (no wireless) | Including the Data port on the side of my neck | |

Apple needs one of those 1.2Gbps Satellites for itunes & iphone
makes u wonder why don't netflix or blockbuster launch there own Sat's with those speeds u can deliver HD movies in few seconds.
+ saves $0.40 stamps saves tree (paper) no pollution (fuel USPS waste) super fast delivery
wonder why directv can't do this they already got the satellites in space they just have to stop making movies playback in real time and deliver the whole payload in few seconds to the receivers instead of letting the DVR software capture the movie in however long is the movie length. most likely there Sat's were not made to work that way

Just be careful you don't hit certain frequencies:

Knowing the Japanese penchant for miniaturization the satellite is probably about the size of a shoe box. |

Yep. Mine (My new HD DVR) uses ethernet to download VOD and other apps I have not tried out yet. The device specifies that you have at least 768K to download.
So I think Directv is using ethernet (gets rid of that stupid phone line) with there extra sats to provide some services that will blow everyone else out of the water. |

Hey what do you expect? I've been right about everything my whole life. Like when i said the future of Canadian broadband is satellite. Right on cue presto ha, ha, ha! Here it is. Canada's salvation from these oligopolies who bilk Canadians dry. But no more, it had to happen and it's happening later rather than sooner because of these Canadian's naiveties. |

Well, some fiber ISP's in US have offered cheap 100 megabit connections for a while now and people find a way to use that connection. Back in 1998 I've had no problems alone fully utilizing 45megabit DS3. A speedy connection simply allows you to do more things at the same time and finding use for additional bandwidth is always easy. As some say, if you build it they will come. |

As cool as that would be, it is impossible to go faster than the speed of light. |
