Comments on news posted 2008-05-14 14:54:23: Here I was thinking Comcast probably didn't need any more bad news, given their subcontractors are consistently in the news for falling asleep, murder, digging in the wrong yard or blowing up laptops, dishwashers or people. ..

Oh Ouch

Damn....

Poor family.....

Comcast PR isn't getting any help from it's contractors, that's for sure...

I see a big payout in their future.... and someone else had a future behind bars.

This makes me not only depressingly sad but livid beyond anything I can think of. This driver should be charged with murder if this little girl dies.

Re: Oh Ouch

They will be. Or at least 1st degree manslaughter.

They had a case here where a young woman was "racing" her car on Riverside Drive.... she lost control at somewhere around 100 mph, and hit the curb, her car flipped and rolled... and went right through a group of cyclists who were biking on the trail in the park, killing one and injuring several.

Her car protected her nicely, she was fine... not so her victims. She got 15 years. Too bad.

Unfortunatly you wouldn't sue Comcast, you would sue the Driver and hopefully be able to sue the Contracting Company hired by Comcast. Comcast hires them as independant contractors to prevent liability, so you would not be able to blame or sue Comcast for this. But the Contracting Companies who did the hiring of these contractors probably could and will be sued, they have money too don't forget!

Comcast equipment, and apparently these were actual Comcast employees, not merely contractors.

So even though Comcast isn't responsible for the outcome, they are liable for ... everything.

No one knows whether they really are contractors or in-house technicians. Both are refered to by Comcast Corp. as employees when it comes down to it. Can anyone get a picture of the vans??? Contractors will have such designated on the side/back.

This goes to prove that Contractors aren't the only ones who cause problems...

Also: contractors aren't ALL bad... there are a few companies here in Chicago that are pretty good.

TIME Magazine - Employees Racing in Comcast Vans Hit Young Girl!

Two dipsh@ts in Huntsville, Alabama (Yes, they have Cable) were racing their smooth hotrod Comcast Vans and struck a kid. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said, "They're will be an internal investigation into this horrible tragedy; the two vans were carrying expensive Comcast equipment AND THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE!!! And, from our understanding, the kid had no business in the middle of the road but we will pay for the stupid idiot's medical bills as long as the kid's family subscribes to the Comcast Tripe Play. Only $99 in most markets by they way. Certain exclusions apply."

Huntsville Police Chief Bert "Dick" Brannon said the two Comcast guys were arrested and charged with several crimes he couldn't remember. He said, "Those Bo and Luke boys need to stop thinking their shenanigans will impress Jessica Simpson. If, or actually when they are found guilty by the judge that comes once a year, they'll be hanged by the Klan. In the GREAT STATE OF ALABAMA, we don't tolerate speed racing of any kind. I'm just glad it wasn't an, uh, African-American kid since we don't need no more of Jesse Jackson down here startin' trouble."

The police chief is currently under investigation for investing in a brothel. The local prosecutor was unavailable for comment his spokeswoman said. "He's meeting some lawyers at Hooters he said."

Bill O'Reilly, the indignant jerk host of the "Factor", will be doing a special report tomorrow on that ridiculous right-wing propaganda network FoxNews.

NASCAR said they wouldn't be dropping Comcast as a sponsor but may look into it. "The fans should decide."

BTW, racing? They were going 75 in a 50. Maybe that is racing for AL but that sounds pretty standard for any state I drive in.

Yes, it's sad a child was injured. Yes, they should and likely will be dealt with.

However, it was on topic and hilarious. It was parody and sarcasm. If Leno or Conan read that fake article durring a monologue the audience would be rolling. Some people are just WAY too sensitive these days and that's an even larger issue than someone having a sense of humor.

Karma is a bitch. Im as politically incorrect as the next guy but I do not see making a joke out of someones daughter getting hit by a van speeding at 75MPH as "politicaly incorrect"
I see it as callus, thoughtless and self centerd. But then again, isnt that what the internet if for?

the problem is that comcast does not do the screening for the contractors. the company they go through for the contractor are the ones who do the screening. comcast has changed contractor companies several times but i think comcast needs to start doing the screening themselfs for the contractors.

Not any ware in that article does it say they were "contractors".
I'm not saying that makes a difference. Those involved need to be punished but quit taking shots at contractors every chance you get!

And Comcast does the screening for the contractors, a background check form and photo has to be turned in in-order for that tech to work for Comcast.

And why is it allways Consumerist the one that pickes up these kinds of stories, do we not have members that live in the area of the News agency to submit the stories? Have we now resorted to using Consumerist as a source, just like CNN, MSNBC, ect.....?

You can't do a background check for

stupidity?

By the way isn't the title of this story just a tad misleading?

Hadley says, "They were racing. It looked like they were racing. They were going in and out and trying to keep up with each other." - Witness accounts are always accurate!

According to Huntsville Police, no criminal charges have been filed at this time and the accident is currently under investigation. - Lynch them NOW!

Title of story not misleading at all, given the reports, actions, and results. Sounds like pretty accurate summation for a title.

Scary Comcast employees/contractors

Comcast has been repeatedly risked the lives of customers, other employees and general public by hiring the "near" bottom of society.

Comcast believes that if a few people are adequately intelligent and responsible, they can cover for all the inadequate and incompetent employees they hire for a bargain.

Next thing you'll be hearing about is that Comcast employees/contractors use their job to scout your home for robbery.

Hiring a moron with a 92 white Chevy pick-up and throwing a Comcast magnet sign on the door is not the answer.

I have eyes.
I've dealt with the contractors.
I've talked to lots of CSR's.

The CSR's from Canada are pretty good.
They speak English, and seem to be able to process information, not just read off the sheet.

By the way the old white Chevy S10 pickups (long bed) with the Comcast magnets is very true around here.

Re: Scary Comcast employees/contractors

Ok, having eyes will give you some insight. Dealing with the techs will also give you some. However talking to CRS in Canada will not.
I'm not trying to sound like a jerk here but I have been in charge of contractor hiring in my area for 7 years now and not 1 (thats not even one) of them has come close to the things I hear about techs doing on BBR. It doesn't matter if it's in-house or out-house if the techs in your area are that bad then management is to blame. That would be in-house management for not doing their job.
Also, I'm just curious if a tech pulls into your driveway in a "92 chevy s-10" as opposed to a newer van or truck do you pass judgement on that tech and his/her ability to do his/her job based on what they are driving? Or is it assumed that if it's not a newer truck that must be a contractor because in-house would never let their techs drive in an older truck right?
I just want to know if your against contractors or older trucks?

Screening?

"Can I officially say Comcast's labor screening process needs work yet, or no?"

No, someone could look perfect in interviews, screening coming up 100% clean, they could work for a company for 15years with NO complaints or problems and then make one mistake and people will say "Comcast needs to screen better". The person made a stupid mistake, one that how many other people working or not do on a daily basis on our roads.

The TECHS should not have been speeding/racing/ect. And I definatly feel bad for the child injured, and if she dies yes the driver should see jailtime, if they infact racing then BOTH should see jailtime. But don't say the screening process is bad due to a techs stupidity that a screening process in the PAST cannot predict.

Cheese with their Whine

For the corporate fan boys out there here is some cheese to go along with your myopic whine.

The Comcast corporate shills make me want to vomit. A girl is laying near death in a hospital and like it or not Comcast is responsible. I am neither a fan boy or a hater, I am a realist. Reality is the vast majority of Comcast employees are hardworking and put safety first, however, that does not negate Comcast's responsibility when their employees destroy property, maim, or kill on the job. It also doesn't change the fact that a disproportionate number of these incidents seem to happen under the Comcast umbrella. We do not hear of these things happening to Verizon, Time Warner, or AT&T.

Comcast workers help as brothers escape blaze

Seems all BBR cares to post is how bad Comcast is. They fail to post about the "good" of them.

LAKE IN THE HILLS – Two brothers escaped a fire in Lake in the Hills Friday morning, one by going out a window onto an overhang.

Two Comcast workers in the area saw 21-year-old Robert Nash escaping a smoke-filled bedroom and handed him a ladder. Comcast Network Maintenance Technicians Brad Dedina, 36, of Lake in the Hills and Josh St. John, 32, of Woodstock were driving on Virginia Road after dropping off a Comcast van at Crystal Lake Pontiac-GMC.

“As we drove by, we saw smoke coming out of the side of the house, so we turned around and came back,” Dedina said. “When we got there, we saw one of the guys of the house get out onto the lower section of the roof, and the fire was getting bigger. We just grabbed the ladder off of our truck and helped him down.”

Robert Nash said he was sleeping when he heard noises in the house’s vents.

“I smelled a match, but I ignored it. But it kept on lingering,” Nash said. “So I went downstairs, and there was nothing but black.”

He said he crawled through an upstairs window and planned to leap from a second-story ledge, but a 911 operator advised him to wait. That was when the Comcast crew rescued him, he said.

Nash’s 12-year-old brother, Jason, was home sick from school. He was taking a shower downstairs when he smelled smoke. The boy was able to get outside.

Jason Nash opened the bathroom door and saw smoke and fire coming from the basement. He grabbed his cell phone, left through the front door of the house, and called 911.

The fire in the two-story farm house at 9320 Virginia Road started in the basement about 9:30 a.m. No one was injured, and there were no pets in the house, said Kim Matz, public information officer for the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Department.

Fire investigators determined that combustible materials in close proximity to a hot water heater in the basement started the fire, Matz said.

The house did not have working smoke detectors, Matz said. The Lake in the Hills building department said the home was uninhabitable after the damage, although no damage estimate was available.

Crystal Lake, Huntley, Cary, Fox River Grove, East Dundee, Carpentersville, Barrington, and McHenry departments assisted Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Department with the fire.

The fire was under control at 9:57 a.m., Matz said.

Laura Nash said she and her four children would stay with relatives Friday night. Her 19-year-old daughter, Sarah, returned from Northern Illinois University after the fire and picked up her 18-year-old sister, Meaghan, from classes at Dundee-Crown High School.

Laura Nash cried as she stood outside her house Friday afternoon with her family.

“I’m so grateful that they’re OK,” she said. “Words can’t describe it.”

That's because a news article about something bad will get 100+ comments, whereas an article about the good news will get 2. Why do you think the 11 o'clock news is 95% negative/trash talk?

well, when a company's image to its tech-savy (i.e. BBR users) customers is that it has a draconian 'reasonable network management' policy, it's not exactly that hard to find reasons to pick on the said company, is it? Of course, YMMV with Comcast, but it has stepped into some deep $hit with the entire Sandvine debate(although it's authenticity belongs to a whole different forum), and it sure as hell doesn't make it look good to us.

Boooooring

You cable nerds love bitching about anything Comcast etc.
I mean I could understand if they blew the kid up (like they have blown up laptops), burnt down the house with the kid in it, killed the kid while in the home of a customer, etc and so on but who cares what company they worked for when they were driving a van, illegally racing, and hurt someone.
Bla bla bla blame Comcast, personally I don't blame Comcast, I blame the idiots racing and driving recklessly. The fact that it was actually Comcast employees is basically irrelevant to the story, save the pay out they are going to have to make to the family.

For the record, I have TWC and am not a Comcast employee, contractor, sub-contractor or any of that. I just think the focus should be on the child and punishing the idiots driving, the distraction of who they work for is exactly that, a distraction.
