nobody cares about ISP Portals.

I don't know a single person who uses one, or even looks at the front page.
How about you guys focus on making your network more robust, so you don't have to impose limits on your customers?

Ridiculous

As I said earlier on Twitter:

Comcast + Plaxo = ridiculous. OTOH, a nice payday for some.

I dont think I will ever use Plaxo...

I still to this day have a bad taste in my mouth from the Plaxo of years past. That annoying, semi-spyware/annoyware platform they used to sell really pissed a lot of people off. The worst was that anyone who did sign up for it then bombarded all their friends/business associates/etc. with Plaxo advertisements. I understand they have tried very hard to move away from who they were, but shouldnt they at least change the name?? Plaxo to me = crapware that I will never use, and I would bet many other people feel that way too.

I don't use it regularly, but I do go to it on occasion to see what they have for free in the way of new services like Rhapsody, Security software, etc.

Who uses their ISP's portal anyway...

Instead of the big internet ISPs purchasing some stupid social networking portal... start-up companies, why won't they just upgrade their infrastructure?!

There's nothing wrong with being a "dumb pipe", on the contrary, the customers will enjoy the extra "dumb pipe" service.

When I was with Rogers, I didn't use their portal. I'm now with a small ISP, smaller bills better service and higher bandwidth.

comcast.net

I go there occasionally to see what email might be in the inbox(yeah, I used the email once or twice), and to check CDV calls/voicemails.

Plaxo? Meh. I looked at it once... kinda.
We'll see. LOL!

Ad delivery method?

I wonder how long it will take Comcast to start using this as another delivery method for ads?

Re: comcast.net

Yeah, it's handy having a place to check email and voicemail remotely. Combining the two into one site makes sense.

If they could get some of the functionality that's in mail clients like Thunderbird into their website (like setting up rules for handling mail or the ability to grab email from other domains) then it might be worth looking at.

Setting up your DVR online is kind of cool. It would be nice to be able to do that remotely.

I'll check it out once they get it up and running.

I don't really ever look at the rest of the site, but it's hard to argue against an ISP providing a place to check and manage emails. Providing a full-fledged portal isn't really what I'd like my ISP to be doing, but this smartzone thing sounds like it could be neat depending on how it works.

There are millions of people who do use ISP portals, and ISP webmail. I personally dont, however I would argue that the majority of normal users (ie. people who DONT visit this site) are happy with their ISP portals and other services.

As I mentioned to the other poster, while people who visit this site would certainly like a "dumb pipe" we are the minority. The overwhelming majority of users want/need ISP portals to navigate the web. Keep in mind that there are still literally millions of AOL users today, and those that recently switched dont feel comfortable using an "open" internet connection. These people tend to use the ISP portals as a homepage because it gives them all the information they need in one place. With many ISP portals including a Yahoo or Google search bar on the main page, their customers really dont need to go anyplace else.

Dont get me wrong, a dumb pipe would be great for me and many of the people I know. The reality however is that unless you find a really small "niche" ISP you arent going to get one. There is too much money, and too much demand for ISP's to provide ancillary services for this type of thing to ever go away. Frankly, this type of thing will only become more popular as time goes on so get used to it!

I was never crazy about Plaxo either. I use Linkedin.com and people from there send Plaxo invites all the time. Their platform like you mentioned was annoying at best.

Re: nobody cares about ISP Portals.

You know, there's an awful lot of advertising on Comcast's web portal. Did anyone ever consider that it might actually be adding to the bottom line, not taking money away from network improvements?

Unfortunately, it's kind of hard to pick out exactly where the web portal stands in terms of whether it turns a profit or a loss because Comcast lumps it together with Spectacor (the entity which owns the sports teams in Philly) and corporate overhead. However, there was this paragraph in the Q1 earnings:

Corporate and Other

Corporate and Other includes corporate overhead, Comcast Spectacor, Comcast Interactive Media (CIM), and other operations and eliminations between Comcast's businesses. For the first quarter of 2008, Corporate and Other revenue increased to $110 million from $88 million in the first quarter of 2007 primarily due to the strong performance at CIM from internet advertising and search revenue and the inclusion of Fandango. The Operating Cash Flow loss for the first quarter of 2008 decreased to $81 million compared to a loss of $96 million for the same period in 2007.
(emphasis added)

In the worst case scenario, a loss of $88 million (and bear in mind this includes all of the corporate overhead expenses like the shiny new building in Philadelphia) is pretty small in the grand scheme of things (by way of contrast, capital expenditures in Q1 were $1.5 billion).

Disclosure: I'm an investor in CMCSA (which is why I see the financials...I received my proxy information a bit over a month ago).

If I use an ISP portal, its to get some more information about the ISP, find ways to pay the bill, figure out if they offer a free webpage or technical support. The news, weather, search crap is all done better by dedicated websites.

Re: Who uses their ISP's portal anyway...

Agreed. Dumb Pipe = Great. However, most people here are thinking above basic computers 101. We don't realize that there are tens of millions out there who still use dialup or don't understand computers. I actually did a master's research on this topic on a small scale a while back and wasn't amazed by what I found. I interviewed about 10 or 15 people regarding their computer usage (specific type of work) and found many weren't comfortable with them. The ages tended to be 40+. Some didn't even use or care to know about computers at all. Let's face it, the 40+ crowd still has a lot of users who are lucky to be able to turn on a computer. As you said and stated, those ISP web ports are then their godsend.
